Guest Post – Linda Beatha – Nothing Ever Went Right At Our House

Last week I was approached by the fantastically great writer and blogger Linda, of Nutsrok, to do a guest post swap.

Linda

Here she is!

Great idea! I have never had a guest post on my blog before, so why not start with an amazing writer like Linda! If you haven’t already checked her blog out, please do! It is a mixture of recollections of her own younger days, excerpts of memories from her mothers history, which she is going to be publishing, and generally funny stories, and jokes!  I always finish a post of hers with a smile on my face, if not a guffaw!

So without further ado, I present to you, Linda and her guest post!

Nothing Ever Went Right At Our House

Nothing ever went right at our house.  As a family, we could fall in a rose bed and come out smelling like horse manure.  I don’t know why I thought planning a wedding would be any different.  To start, Mother was absolutely furious I was getting married in college, nothing personal, she just didn’t want me to ruin my life.  I asked her to go shopping with me for fabric for a wedding dress, thinking she’d warm up to the idea a little.  I was a Sophomore and hadn’t had Psychology 101, so hadn’t learned about passive-aggressive behavior.  I was surprised when I got home that weekend to find Mother only had a few minutes to shop with me.  Also, when we did go, we had to take my eight and ten year old sisters and run a few errands for Daddy.  Once we got to the fabric store, Mother impatiently gave me a few minutes to pick white dotted-Swiss and a Simplicity pattern, total cost twelve dollars twelve dollars seventy-two cents, of the fifteen dollars I had saved from my student job.  The dress would have to be street length since it would have cost two dollars more to make it long. Mother didn’t offer to kick in, since the point was we couldn’t afford to get married.

We were in Mother’s red Volkswagon Beetle.  The car was already full with two adults and two children.  I hadn’t realized one of the errands was picking up one hundred pounds of chicken feed up at the feed store.  Since we had already stopped at the fabric store and a couple of other stores, the trunk area for packages under the hood was full.  The big bag of chicken feed had to go in the back seat.  That meant Connie and Marilyn had to get out so the man at the feed store could wrestle the bag of grain into the back seat, since of course it was only a two door car, then crawl back up and sit up on the bag to ride home.  Add this to Mother’s punishing mood, and I was seriously regretting  my decision to try to include her.
