Spidey’s Serene Sunday – Part 53

image

One man practicing kindness in the wilderness is worth all the temples this world pulls.”

Jack Kerouac

I really believe this.
Just yesterday my Pops and I were talking religion… in Sikhism there is an expectation to do ‘Seva’.
This is charitable work and volunteering or donating to good causes.
Many folk who may have no time but they have the money feel it is best to give their donations to the Gurdwara.
But most gurdwaras have all they need, and then some.
Someone Pops knows said that instead of just blindly donating to the temple, it would be more beneficial, and true Seva, to give to a real needy person, or to help somewhere physically, because that kindness will never go unnoticed.
I think today’s quote really encompasses this theory.
Happy Sunday Peeps!

But I Smile Anyway...

I love that quote. I added it to my collection. And I think its true – the kindness shown in person, in effort on our part, is so much more powerful than we give it credit for.

Not that a donation of money is bad, obviously we wouldn’t have gotten so far in this world without charities, but its not a substitute for immediate local effort.

Absolutely. .. I think the thing is you don’t always know where your money is being used especially when given to a religious place of worship… are you helping someone or lining the priest’s pockets??

A very wise quote indeed Spidey. I agree practical help is sometimes so much more helpful than donations πŸ™‚

Interesting quote and concept. Judaism has something similar called tzedakah and it’s usually just giving money to a community pot that is used to help the needy. It’s where everyone gives their loose change and very little effort. Yet, I remember there being a poster in Sunday school that explained there are different levels. The mentioned method is rather basic, but there is a more about putting in time and physical effort to help others. In fact, one of the biggest levels is to help a person to prevent them from falling on hard times in the first place. Wonder if a lot of religions have a charity system.

Yes, Sis! I absolutely love that. I think exactly the same way about it!!!! Not just leaving money somewhere blindly but thinking where to leave or actively practicing acts of kindness and thoughtfulness. πŸ’–
