So the SoCS prompt this week is Balls… (Hope you like it Linda!)
I’ve often thought of trying a SoCS post but the time is never right…
This week however, read the prompt and a story came to mind immediately.
Not a fiction story, but just a recount really of a short conversation I had with my fast growing up 10 year old son, Lil Man, yesterday evening.
My children were discussing standing on the wall at break, and lunchtime. This is a kind of time out that is used in our playgrounds for the children to reflect if they have been a little naughty…
There are three playgrounds, one for the little one, one for the lower juniors and one for the upper juniors.
There is a fantastic playing space and climbing frames for the small children, but no ball games. The other playgrounds have four-square courts, and football pitches.
Lil Princess asked her brother it he had ever been on the wall. Now my some loves a good kick about, and has a tremendous kick on him for one so small.
“Yeah, about five or six times, because the ball goes over the fence all the time.”
She then probed further, “But not in the little playground?”
“No, we didn’t have balls in Year One…” Then he looked at me and said “Erm, that sounded a bit inappropriate!” And grinned!
You know he’s had his PSHE – Sex Ed classes!

~Thanks Linda! I have thought for a long time about taking part in your SoCS prompts, but time always seems to be too little… When I read your prompt post yesterday, I thought I may try.. then after that conversation last night, it was like an omen, I just had to write! I am glad you enjoyed it!

😂😂😂 AWESOME!!!
So funny, that you and Judy went into this subject (when even Judy only “touched” it briefly). LOL!!! But I think this is what we all think spontaneously… lol!

They always know me than we think they do…or want them to. Even at his age. My boys are 13 and twins are 10. They come off with stuff sometimes that had me asking, “Where’d you hear that?”. The “talk” has already ensued. 😃

WE had the whole ‘talk’ in June of last year, as that was when they were being taught at school… it was a period of truly blogger fodder filled moments!

Haha! You’re right about that. We started ours last summer. It continues to this day, as needed. They’re really quite appropriate with their questions actually. I’m hopeful that us being open and honest and not shrouding sex in some hush-hush aura will result in more respectful and less sophomoric young men. Time will tell though, as boys will be boys. 😃

Exactly… I don’t want him to be the innocent amongst the group, but equally, I don’t want him to grow too fast either!!!

Agreed. Not do I want mine having their view of sex and women corrupted by the little shits on the playground. I know how boys are. They can be real idiots about such things. Hopefully, mine won’t be.

No doubt. The playground will soon supplant me as a primary influence, I fear. I hope they’re paying attention to me more.

Just have to educate him now and hope he listened. Short of banning friends totally, not sure what else we can do. 😃

Totally! The things that he has going through his head are so funny, and yet he is still so childlike, as he not able to hide it, but tells us what he thinks!
I know it won’t be long ’til he wont want to talk to us about ‘stuff’ but until then, I shall cherish this innocence!!!

Oh yes, it is a lovely stage of innocence at that age before the teens kick in! 🙂
