Just Friends Part 9
She couldn’t very well cry off tonight. That would have been the easiest thing to do, but then Lara never made life very easy for herself!
Of course, being one of the pivotal people to help orchestrate the ‘Big Proposal’, she had then been roped into helping to arrange the engagement party to celebrate this momentous occasion, alongside Amit.
Neil’s reaction to everything had been unexpected, to say the least.  The fact that he had actually said yes was one of the biggest shocks! But then he came over to Lara, a little later on, to say thank you.
“You know, I was getting a little worried about you, us, you know what I mean.  After the other evening, at the bar, I thought there was something you were trying to say, and, well, you know, there’s never been anything like that between us before… Then I hear that you had been organising this whole thing with Mya!”
Lara reddened. Partly because she hated being thanked, but mostly because he had hit the nail on the head!
“No, no! Oh my God! Absolutely not! Pah! Why would I even think that?! Ha  ha!”
Becoming aware that she was possibly going a tad over the top, Lara quickly devised an excuse for her behaviour the other night.
“Actually, I was testing you!”
“Testing me?  Why?” Neil looked a little perplexed.
Continuing her little story, “Well, I had got wind of the fact that Mya was planning something, so I thought I’d be a good friend to her, and see whether you were the type to stray! You know, see if you were faithful to her!” The look on his face was incredulous!
“Me? Stray? Why would you even think that Lar? We have been mates for ages, and I think you probably know me better than anyone! I would have thought you could reassure her without checking up on me!” He actually seemed a little miffed now.
Seeing the need to wrap this conversation up sharpish, Lara tried to change the subject. “ Anyway, what are you going to do to celebrate now? You need to mark the occasion, right?”
Neil thought for a moment.  “ Well ok, and since you are meant to be such a good mate of Mya’s now, and my right-hand woman, maybe you can help me, this time.”
And that’s how she got herself into party planner mode.
It wasn’t anything too major, just a room they had hired in the local bar, one of Amit’s mates doing a spot of deejaying, cake, and some decorations… but now, not only had she managed to direct ‘her’ man into the arms of the she-devil, but she had even arranged the celebrations!
So tonight was the night.
Mel was coming with her, as support, and also because she had been promised free drinks. Amit would be meeting them there early too.
A couple of hours into the evening, the three Muskateers stood in a corner, surveying the party.
There they were, the couple du jour, Mya swanning around, showing off a ring that Neil had magicked up a few days after the proposal, and him, following her around, grinning inanely, and accepting congratulations willy nilly.
“If you ask me,” Amit whispered, “ you had a lucky escape Lar! I mean, look at him! Who knew he was such a sap! He’s following her around like her lap dog, and Jeez, look at her, I mean really! Pink Manolos, if they really are Manolos, with a baby blue body con dress… Attention seeking harlot!”
Mel was a little unsteady on her feet, enjoying the open bar a bit too much, but she had her bit to say too “Dappy cow! Oooh, drink finished, think I need another!”
Just then the couple in question appeared in front of them.
“Thank you so much for arranging this party Lara and Amit! Who knew what amazing friends you would turn out to be!” Mya fluttered her eyelashes at them coyly. Neil grinned.
Before Lara could say anything, someone else came over to admire the ring, and their attention was diverted.
She decided that enough was enough. Not wanting to hang around much longer, she told Mel and Amit she wanted to get out of here.  Grabbing her bag, she thought she could just slip out… Amit was staying, as he had a lift home with the DJ and Mel, well, where there were free drinks, there was Mel!
Lara managed to get as far as the exit, with her head low, so as not to be spotted, and as she finally went to step out, she walked straight into someone.
“Oh, sorry! I didn’t see….” As she looked up, her speech halted. Standing in front of her was a true blast from the past….

And the audio file too!

Hmm, you threw me an unexpected there I think. You nailed the celebration I was hoping for. 🙂 At least the type of. There had to be one with how the girl is. She couldn’t settle for a nice dinner with her fiance.

Now where to take this. Hmm. I have two thoughts. One could be totally mean, the other could be less mean. Muahahahahahaha!

Great way to end this chapter, Ritu. If this were a book I’d certainly be reading on. It’s gathering pace.

I can see that. You are also one huge bit of inspiration and I like the way you end your pieces besides the fluid prose.
