The BIG UK Vs. USA Debate – Malteasers Vs. Whoppers!

My post for Hugh’s challenge this week, featuring Malteasers, started a little debate between myself and PJ of Priceless Joy blog fame.

2016-03-25-19.08.43.jpg.jpeg

Well, debate may be a bit of a strong way to describe, but I am a firm Malteaser fan. I may go so far as to say they are my most favourite chocolate treat EVER!

So it was interesting to hear that the US had their own version, called Whoppers. PJ was sceptical that the US one would taste better than the UK one, and being a bit biased, I was inclined to agree… I have tasted American chocolate several times, and I’m sorry but I much prefer my UK chocolate thank you very much!

So when my family and I went for a day out to Lakeside Shopping centre yesterday, it wasn’t my intention to do this, but we passed a candy store which holds all manner of imported US candy.  I asked out of curiosity whether they stocked these Whoppers.  Alas they didn’t… but there was another store of a similar ilk that was possibly a stockist.

Right! This was great! I was so excited! I could feel a comparison post coming on, if only I could get hold of these Whoppers… and YES! They did!

So armed with my boxes of chocolates, purely for research purposes, I’ll have you know, I came home and the eating  reviewing and eating photographing commenced!

Sorry, but I love my Malteasers packaging too much… so that was one point to them straight away!

Now to look at the product itself…

2016-03-26-12.13.27.jpg.jpeg

Note the glossy finish of the Malteaser, compared to the misshapen sphere that is the Whopper… Hmmm… another point to the Malteaser for appearance!

And then the biggie, the taste test!

A Whopper, has that different aftertaste, chocolate wise and the ‘malt’ or honeycomb inside was rather hard and dense to bite into.

A Malteaster, the chocolate was beautifylly milky, and the honeycombe centre, light, yet crisp.

Point 3 awarded to Malteasers!

I got the family to do a blind taste test too, and they were all unanimous in choosing Malteasers as the best taste!

An amendment here, Lil Princess liked the look of Malteasers but thought the Whoppers tasted better! Sheesh! I’m going to sent her to live in the US, traitor!!!

Sorry USA, but I think we won this one hands down!

And if you would like to read about more of my Malteaser adventures, click here! Malteasers apparently help with mindfulness!

(Shhhh! Don’t tell anyone but I have hidden the rest of the Real Malteasers now! They are mine… all mine!!!! Mwahhhh ha ha ha!)

I love the new job you got yourself, Ritu. I’ve eaten lots of chocolate and I think the British certainly have the best tasting chocolate. Those ‘Whoppers’ look uninviting being out of shape and dull looking. I wonder if they do a version of our Revels? If so, then that’s another tasting test for you. 😀

The Maltesers look better if you ask this American. I am not a fan of Whoppers anyway.

Mmm, I would like both, I’m sure. In a way, it’s not fair to taste test things you’re already fond of and accustomed to. Do you know what I mean? Like when you’re used to your mom’s ____ dish, but you eat my mom’s ____ dish, and you’re like, “Nah, I like my mom’s better.” Everyone likes their mom’s ____ dish better, lol! 😛

Sis, you should become a restaurant testers! Your “review” was amazing! I tasted US chocolate for a year…. yes, they are good and I have to admit that they have the best chocolate cakes ever!!! …. but the chocolate itself is never comparable to the Swiss or Austrian chocolate. I don’t know UK chocolate but I think it might be similar. At least, one thing is for sure: Maltesers are on Top!!!

I love Malteasers! (Biased obviously) The packaging on the Whoppers looks like a cheap knock off. I’ve heard (may not be true at all) that American chocolate isn’t nice, that’s too sweet and sugary. Apparently Cadbury’s was huge in America because it’s milk chocolate so not too sugary. But it’s now banned in America? I heard because it was doing the American companies out of business because it’s nicer but I’m sure there’s more to it than that ha.

I live in the US and hate all major US candy makers chocolate. Weird, it actually used to be better, but still substandard, but has in the last 20 or 30 years gone even farther downhill – Whoppers when I was a kid used to be perfect spheres and pretty good. Now they are awful. I only eat artisanal chocolates, usually Belgium style and at least 70% cocoa. Most large company chocolates literally make me sick to my stomach, so if I did enjoy eating them, I couldn’t enjoy them afterwards.. 😦

    YAY Malteasers!
Luckily living in Canada we have the best of both worlds as we get imports from both the U.S. and the U.K.
Sadly the difference has very little to do with cows milk and more to do with regulations in content. The limits as to how much actual chocolate or cocoa is used in a product is much lower in the U.S. Also the amount of “filler” (nothing to do with chocolate) is added to a product is much higher in the U.S.
Europeans just like higher chocolate content and less…wax, animal fats and petroleum products in their chocolate.

Great post! I love malted milk balls… the problem with Whoppers is they don’t use real chocolate and just as you noted, the centers are tough. Unfortunately, here in the United States, low and Candy manufacturers used fake chocolate and it is awful. as I said, I love malted milk balls so I must buy them from candy stores that sell Quality Candy by the pound. Whoppers and most of the products made by The Leaf company give candy a bad name.
Thanks for exposing this lousy candy! It’s loaded with corn syrup and chemicals.

I’ve been told that the reason chocolate from the USA tastes different is because of what the dairy cows eat Ritu, so the milk used in conjunction with the Cacao has a different taste.
You can also taste the difference in Swiss chocolate for the same reason; e.g. the cows eat more wildflowers which are very abundant in the Alps, whereas British cows eat grass from fields that have been almost cleared of wildflowers.

Yup, that is the reason… I remember being in India for a month, and I took lots of our UK chocolate with me, to survive. On a trip to Amritsar, I saw Cadburys chocolate on sale, and was over the moon, until I tasted it! It was made in India!
The whoppers centre is just too hard too!!!!

I don’t like Whoppers at all! I’m sure Maltesers are better! I don’t know where I would get my hands on some but I’m going to agree with you, even though I’m in the U.S.
