Appointments

If you are in the UK, you will totally identify with the little cartoon below.  It appears that when you are unwell, it is almost impossible to get an appointment straight away. Usually, the next available pre-bookable one will be three weeks from now… no good if you are literally ‘dying’ right now!  The other option in many surgeries is to ring in the morning for an appointment.  That is not always convenient either, or there is such a glut of people calling for the same reason, that when you do get through, they are already fully booked!

The other thing you can do is go to a walk-in centre, where you are usually guaranteed to be seen though you may have to wait 3-4 hours in a room with other coughing, sniffling beings, and you might even leave iller than you were before you arrived, due to cross contamination!

I was in this situation today, having suffered from a few ailments recently, I thought I had better go and visit my dear GP, during the holidays, to save having any time off from school. Dreading the phone call, I came off it, inspired to write a little ditty!

Appointments for Current Ailments

A time that I was dreading
Had come, and I was made
To make that darned phonecall
To the doctors, be afraid!

So I dialled the number and waited
Normally greeted by engaged tone
Imagine my shocked face when
Someone actually answered the phone!

Usually, you need to plan
The time when you are ill
To get seen when sickness strikes
The chances oft, are nil

Some ‘umming’ and ‘aahing’ followed
And then to my surprise
An appointment was confirmed
Tomorrow, pm at 5!

    Tomorrow, pm at 5!
By that time if I’m still alive
I will rather take a vicodin
And listen to a soulful violin

Absolutely agree – it’s impossible to get an appointment in Northamptonshire too. They also ring you on different numbers while you are at work and don’t leave messages, then have a go at you when you get there because you have changed your phone and not told them. They get even more grumpy when you point out that you haven’t !

Wow, that’s pretty annoying… I think we are pretty lucky with out GP. Usually get in right away. And usually no long waits.

And when you phone in the morning, you get the nice doctor to phone you first, you know, in case you’re wasting their time with your silly illness. Once, the doctor said to me “you can come see me if you want, but I’m sure it’s just a cold.” I insisted and when he examined me, he said “oh…you actually have a chest infection.” Well, D’UH! lol

LOL! I had to go in for an ultra sound today and of course, you have to go in with a full bladder. They had me wait for an hour and I was about fit to be tied. I finally said something to the receptionist that I wasn’t going to be able to wait much longer. She said it would be 10 more minutes. I watched my watch and if it turned to 15 minutes, I was heading to the ladies room then home. I was going to walk out. But, in 10 minutes they came and got me.

Oh I remember the ultrasounds…. They are not fun, especially when they are running late!
I remember being told to go, just a little to relieve yourself…But the thing is once you start… how can you stop?!

In Lincolnshire, getting an appointment was almost impossible. Getting a follow up with the same person, unlikely. Booking an appointment in advance, FAT CHANCE. At least here it’s a little better and I only had to wait 2 weeks to see a lady doctor.

Yes, Ritu. I want the diagnosis in verse as well.
