So the first two Maths, or Numeracy, papers are done.
They were hard again, yes, but the Arithmetic paper, which now takes the place of the Mental Maths test, was pretty much in line with what the pupils had been practicing. The Reasoning one, or the word problems paper, part 1 was tough. Again it’s not just the maths skills involved, but the wording of the questions that can boggle the minds of adults, let alone the children.
I knew he’s find it hard, but you know what, at least he gave it his best.
Actually, one of his friends said to me that he whizzes through things and gets them right! Not sure of the truth in that but nice to see his mates have faith in him!
Today is the last day of tests. One more Maths Reasoning paper, so more stupidly worded maths problems.
Again that whisper will be in his ear, to do his best. That all we can ask.
I’ve already suggested to his teacher they should have a pyjama day tomorrow, to come in and be able to chill for the first time in many months!
Wishing all the SATs takers luck again for this last paper.
Please, step back after today, amd try and remember what it’s like to be kids again. Enjoy yourself, play, be merry. There is a lifetime of education ahead of you and I hope you are able to access it positively without too many scarred memories of this last few months.

I’m late to the party, but you’re right. All you can do is try your best. I hate standardized testing and my son will go through it next year as a third grader.

All those children deserve a day of fun for having to go through that kind of pressure.

Thank God this week is nearly over for those that are taking the dreaded SATS. I think it would be a good idea to have a pyjama and fun day for them all as a stress buster and a little treat for all of their hard work.

sounds like you could do with a pyjama day, or maybe a bottled of chilled chianti day…

Attending a wedding will give you no respite- if it is a big, fat Indian wedding.
But you need a day off too, Ritu.
BTW, why do the kids have to do SATs so early in their lives- over here they do it during their grades 12 or O levels or A levels ?

It is an indian wedding but a small affair. We’re just guests so my only worry is fitting into my clothes!
Hope it won’t be too stressful!
As for these SATS … apparently they are to record a childs progress throughout their acadalemic career… they have them at the end of Key stage 1 or 6-7 years old then at the end of Key stage 2 or 10-11 years.
Then the next ones will be GCSE’S. .. at the end of Secondary… after that A levels…
It seems to be the way the government like to use this data to then produce league tables… but it really bears no semblance to what a school is really like. .. and stresses kids from a young age!!!

It almost seems as if they are setting up the kids to fail When a question can boggle the mind of an adult and possibly induce a headache, I wonder what a child is to make of it?

Exactly… I think there is a bigger plan afoot. .. not necessarily positive for us though …

Funny enough, I heard this over the news this evening as we drove home, where people complained about UK SAT’s how teachers are better qualified to test students instead of external examiners and how this might induce mental stress for the children.

Good luck with the homestretch. The pajama idea sounds great. Just something to wash away the stress. Especially since these tests sound brutal, especially the math.
