Decorating – Phase 4/5 … and Completion!

It’s been a week and a day… (but who’s counting…?!) and finally my children are sleeping in their own bedrooms!

So Phase 4 was getting furniture moved around, and building flat pack furniture…

So one bed was moved into the other, but it was not possible to sleep in due to all the stuff still in the room! Luckily the bunk bed that we had invested in 5 years ago had a pull out single bed under it, so they spent yet another night in their shared bedroom.

Yesterday we managed to get delivery of both the wardrobes and assembled one of them.

Note to all: building flat pack furniture with your spouse or partner can be a volatile activity. It can either strengthen your bond or create rifts!

We had our squabbles, but we managed to put the wardrobe together… well, it was going smoothly until the end, when the sliding doors appeared to have an issue… the doors weren’t staying in! After much huffing and puffing on Hubby Dearest’s part, and calls to the company, we sort of gave up. My in-laws had a family friend round doing some work, and he is a bit of a Jack of all trades, so I rushed off to show him the apparently faulty part.

Alas, he had left for home moments before I arrived! And the Trade shops in the area didn’t have these parts in stock either!

I was so frustrated! We had made the whole thing… were we going to fall at the final hurdle?

Then Hubby Dearest called me to say he had fixed it! I can tell you sheepishly, that I hadn’t read a little note on the part which allowed you to adjust the wheel height, which solved the whole issue!

We then decided it was best to sleep… it had been a tiring day!

 

Today, it was the turn of the second cupboard… which was even more complex, with many parts!

First, we had to dismantle the old one, and dispose of it… you should see the pile of refuse we have now for collection next week!

I was a total teacher and sorted the parts, and even labelled the screws and things, so I was able to reach for the correct things as I needed them! Masking tape is a great thing!

While building this one we got a notification that the desks would be arriving today too! Excellent! I wasn’t expecting them until next week, so this meant we could get things done much quicker!

So, the cupboard took nearly 5 hours to get right, and then we couldn’t agree on the layout of either room! We want the kids to get maximum use out of the space they have, but we both have very different ideas! Still, he won for Lil Man’s room, and I won for Lil Princess’s layout!

I disappeared for 45 minutes to town to pick up some new bits for the rooms, extension leads, lampshades, duvet covers, hangers etc… then rushed back to give the new bed clothes a wash!

It was impossible for me to wait until tomorrow so I decided to start the desks and it took me an hour to do the first one. After a bite (or 3!) of pizza, I scuttled off to make the second one and did it within half an hour with mo instructions! Go Me! I am the Flat Pack Queen!

Then I started unpacking things, setting the bookshelves straight, putting clothes away in their new homes, all that stuff…

And here we have them, the finished rooms! All that is remaining is new curtains and rugs!

Oh and a mirror. Lil Princess needs a mirror to look at herself apparently!!

I am so tired, bruised beyond belief, (but then that is because I am so clumsy… it was inevitable!) it was 11pm before the kids finally went to sleep!

I need a shower, a drink, a massage, a holiday!

Until tomorrow my lovely Peeps! I know it’s not finished yet…so much stuff to still rehome, but for tonight I will pretend that we are done!

    Ah yes, the joys of flat pack. Imagine if we humans came like that !
    I am slightly concerned about these phases.(eg phase 4/5). I am not over fond of phases myself. Can’t think why though. It’s probably just a phase I’m going through.

    Bravo! It looks like an incredible effort. I agree about the bonding or breaking, those things are a good test for the solidity of a couple 😀 Enjoy your massage when you get it. you can take turns massaging each other 🙂

    We stopped buying flat pack furniture and now trawl the 2nd hand shops, you can get better quality furniture that way at less than the cost of the flat packs. Well done for finishing.

    Oh the joys of flat pack furniture. Even better when once assembled, you canlt get it out! Luckily the boat was fitted out, and the only flat pack we had was our little coffee table!

    I think I need a drink (or a nap) after just reading this – I’m exhausted even thinking about all that work! There is so much I haven’t done in my own digs, I really don’t know how you have the energy to keep up with your blog and deal with moving things around, much less flat packs. I stand in your shadow.

      Thank you Madelyn! I guess it was a need to get things finished… I hate that the kids didn’t have their own space! But now we need to deal with the rest of the ‘stuff’ that got scattered everywhere around the house!!?

        I imagine it helps to have a male “finishing” partner, even if you still do a great deal of the project yourself. That “greater upper body strength” sure comes in handy when it comes time to move things around.

        That assumes he is proactively helpful and doesn’t respond like grumpy teen, that is. I was once engaged to a “man” where it really was easier to do everything myself than to attempt to motivate him to help (in his own house, too – didn’t have “finish” in his vocab). Needless to say, I left once I had enough time to see how he dealt with house projects (or rather, did NOT deal with them). I could see the future and it wasn’t rosy.

        Your hubby sounds like a keeper, however – even tho’ I’m guessing that you are the energizer bunny in the relationship. Good luck getting it all back in order – and keep those photos coming!

        Bless Hubby Dearest. He is indeed a keeper! can be a typical male with issues finishing certain things but he does appreciate everything when I finish up!!!

        I love the appreciation of a typical male – and most of them have many offsetting GREAT qualities. (We drive them nuts too – lol.)

        Let’s face it, how our homes look tends to be much more important to us, so finishing the home chores isn’t high on their list of to-dos. I mean, where did the expression “typical bachelor pad” come from in the first place?

        After two years, however, and there’s still blue painters tape outlining the walls and windows? Help me Hannah and get me outa’ here! (not exaggerating and that was the least of it — he didn’t even replace ripped-up sub-flooring in his downstairs bath until I pitched a fit because of bugs – you could actually see the ground between the floor studs.)

        When you’re exhausted at the end of a hard-charging day, remember how much worse it could be and put yourself to bed with a satisfied smile on your face.

    you do good work. can I rent you from your husband? I have a room that needs painted. well, maybe two rooms now that I think about it. OK, I promise to feed you and make sure you get bathroom breaks. oh yeh, I have plenty of band-aids so you don’t bleed to death or something worse.

    You two should feel very proud of yourselves!! First you’re still together, that in itself is a remarkable accomplishment! The rooms look fabulous…so much work but well worth the turnout!! Lil Man and Lil Princess should have magical dreams tonight it their beautiful new rooms. I think it was a fantastic compromise that Hubby Dearest did Lil Man’s layout and you did Lil Princess’s layout. Well you deserve a shower, massage, drink & holiday and not necessarily in that order…get some rest, tomorrow will be here soon enough!! Well done!!

      Thank you Lydia! Obviously I didn’t do it alone, but credit where credit’s due, I did a LOT!
      Surprisingly, I love building flat pack furniture… I’d rather do a day of that than painting, any day!
