That Time Of Year Again

It’s October…

The temperatures are still rather erratic here, we get seasonal showers, that feel monsoon-like with the warmth, then the temperature drops all of a sudden, and you feel the arctic breeze, followed by blazing sunshine.

One of the biggest problems is that you really don’t know what to wear. I end up with half my wardrobe in my car, lightweight cardigans and chunky knits, and rain coats, with a thick coat and woolly hat, just in case!

But that still won’t help.

The other big issue is health.

These colds and viruses are going to attack, no matter what.

It always starts with the kids. That Lil Princess is a cold magnet! And when she is unwell, the world knows about it!

So the weekend started with her getting soaked at football training, and a small sniffle becoming a larger one. The cough followed shortly after, then the temperature.

Sunday, she was determined to be well… the dog was still around and she didn’t want to miss out.

Sunday night the coughing started in the night from both junior bedrooms, and Lil Man awoke on Monday with the same cough, and temperature.

But both wanted to go to school. So we dosed them up on Calpol and sent them on their ways.

I popped into the pharmacy on the way home, to stock up on cough and cold remedies, and was sure my mother in law would have tried her Indian remedies on the kids too. and I hoped to get my flu vaccination. It is another important thing for me to get, as I work with little germ machines in nursery!

But the registered pharmacist was not in so the vaccination had to wait…

All stocked up!

I got to my in-laws house to find two children wrapped up in blankets on the sofas, with various poultices around them to get them better, and a teary Lil Princess, and a red-nosed Lil Man.

After drugging the children up, I hoped for a slightly better night’s sleep, but it wasn’t to be. Lil Man woke at 3am with a headache and a temperature so high I could fry an egg on him!

So the meds came out again, and once I settled him in my bed, I went off to book appointments for his parents evening. What else would you do at 3.20am? I was wide awake so thought it would be good to be productive!

Lil Princess stayed home today, even though she’d had a good sleep, and I told my son to do the same, but he hopped out of bed and said he wanted to go to school. Really? Your mum just offered you a sick day at home, and you refused? Strange boy!

I was surprised that I still felt ok. But as the day wore on, I started to feel the sniffles…

After school, and a rather long staff meeting, I got my vaccination done (hence the sore arm). Lil Princess was still coughing but generally better. Lil Man was still not well, with his cough, cold and temperature. I hope he listens to me this time in the morning when I say it’s a good idea to stay at home!

But I am sat here with the sore arm, as mentioned above, and a sore throat… Nooooooo!!!!!!

At least I am prepared with plenty of medicines!

Unfortunately the flu shot doesn’t protect you from random colds… but at least from getting worse. I hope you all feel much better and those crazy weather changes… I so know what you are talking about…

When you buy your next batch of cold medications, check the label for aspartame (renamed aminosweet in some products). and keep looking for something else if you find it. It’s neuro-toxic. Some European countries have outlawed it allow it – so it may not be a problem where you are. NutraSweet, Equal and Sugar Twin are all aspartame-based, btw.

Not to sound like some conspiracy nut-job, the political machinations that got it past the lack of FDA approval in the US initially (Rumsfeld) – and what went on subsequently – made me join a doctor who investigated (initially pro, btw) in her reaction. “Since that day [the day she read a thick file of research] I have not had so much as a stick of aspartame sweetened gum.” Here in America, it’s getting increasingly difficult to avoid it — they are even putting it in toothpaste these days – and in kids OTC medications (like cough syrup).

Hope everybody gets well and stays well!

I remember what it was like when I was a kid – the oldest of five. Although we were a relatively healthy brood, illness would whip through the family whenever one child came home sick with anything, from measles to a bad cold.

Since my Dad was almost always at work, my poor mother was left to play nursemaid, even when she felt lousy herself. I don’t know how she did it.

I don’t know how YOU do it either – or how you manage to keep up with your blog through it all.

I hope you are all feeling great soon.

I seem quite Hardy. I’ll get niggles but they don’t develop fully as I’m looking after the brood. My mum in law catches everything though and now she can’t even talk!!!!!
The coughs are still echoing round the house but everyone is definitely better, even Hubby Dearest.2who also succumbed!
        Thank you 😊

Good to hear – I hope you remain so. Mums must develop higher immunity through frequent exposure. Keep washing those hands!

Poor hubby – and poor you. Men can sometimes be such babies when they’re ill. (btw, I read one study that indicates that they actually do get hit harder than women when they fall ill, so sometimes their moaning might be warranted).

Well, the study was probably designed and run by men themselves – and I haven’t read that it’s been replicated. 🙂 xx, mgh

I have an adverse reaction to needles so I never get a flu shot, plus I’m convinced you get the flu if you get the shot. We have something called Airborne over here, not sure if you have it over there, but at the first sign of a possible cold I start taking it and it works every time! It’s a tablet made up of lots of 13 Vitamins, Minerals & Herbs, including Vitamin C. You drop it in a small amount of water, it’s starts to fizz and about 10 minutes later it’s completely dissolved and you drink it. You do that every few hours for several days and I never get a cold!! Hope you are well enough to attend the birthday outing this weekend!! Hope the kids are feeling better too!! 🙂

Hope it hasn’t developed into a full blown cold, Ritu. Hope you are all feeling better now.
I seem to be one of the lucky ones in that the cold virus does all it can to avoid me. I’m sure in the virus world there’s a poster up with my mugshot on it and a warning to avoid this human at all cost.

I find myself particularly resilient in my older years. It feels like I wouldn’t mind a temperature now and then, if only to get a day to rest and watch movies. But who has time for that?

Lol! I’m more resilient… it never comes out fully so I feel I can’t take a day off… and as a mum there is never a day off… just like as a teacher I feel I can’t be off either! 😶

Hubby Dearest seems to be the most resistant in the family. That is really strange that Lil Man rather goes to school when offered a day home most of all when he really must feel bad. Poor babies ☹️ I hope you are not hit too heavy, Sis!
