Ritu’s Healthy Living – Week 13 #icandothis

Thirteen weeks ago, I embarked on this mission to improve my lifestyle, my eating habits, in order to lose some weight, and generally make myself feel healthier. My plan was to hopefully lose around 2stone. Realistically, 1.5 stone would do.wp-1477781949515.png

And I lost some… then decided I needed another boost so I joined Slimming World too. I was so happy to say that I hit my Slimming World target last week.

I was worried. A few days at my parents and then the big foodfest that is Diwali, last week, meant I was sure I would have my weight creeping up rather than down this week.

Naughty, deep fried food… I had some on more than one day! And rich, creamy rice pudding too!

And it did. I defy anyone who says that they only ever step on the scales once a week! I for one get up, and take all my clothes off to step on my scales every morning! It wasn’t a pleasant sight this week. Usually, I maintain my weight for a couple of days, then the numbers start to decrease. This week, though, the numbers actually crept up….. I put on 2.5lbs and on Tuesday, I was determined, I needed to do something!

So I really focussed, I used an extra part of the Slimming World Diet plan called Extra Easy where there are a few other foods that you curb for a few days too, like excess carbs, and dairy, but you still eat your healthy extras which give you the fibre and calcium you need.

Here is a selection of my meals this last week…

I’ve been tired this week. Back to school after a blissful week off, and the in-laws are away for a prolonged visit to the Motherland, so I have a lot more running around, with the kids. (They help us out so much with the picking up of the children after school, so I can work late, and also Mum in law feeds them too! She has actually frozen lots of mini pots of curry for the kids, so all I have to do is make fresh chapattis for a few of the nights a wee at least!) But I have managed to hit my step count every day, so at least I am moving around!

And when weigh in day approached yesterday, it was with trepidation, but also there was a little hope… and

I stayed the same as last week! Yay! 10 stone still! So the full loss still stands at 18lb over the last 13 weeks.

Hopefully next week will be easier, though a few sweet treats extra seemed to sneak their way between my lips today… oops!

Until next time Peeps!

bloody hard Ritu to get it off and keep it off so ‘chapeau’ as they say to the stars of the Tour de France for their exceptional efforts. I think it roughly translates to ‘hats off’

Thank you Hugh!! It’s quite hard at the moment. The dark, cold evenings beg for you to sit on the sofa, wrapped in blankets with mugs of steaming hot chocolate… And all the pre-Christmas chocolate goodies in the shops are temptations. Comfort food is always so good…. But so bad for you!
But I’m trying to tweak recipes, and make things healthy, so I can indulge (but not, if you know what I mean!)
I still aim to be half the woman I was at the 2016 ABBA’s by our 2017 meeting!!!!!

You GO Girl! I weight every day too. If the scale goes up, I cut down. Works better for me than waiting until I’m on an upward trend. But I don’t agonize over how long it takes for the scale to go back down again, or that I’m heavier now than I was in my 20s. Healthy is my goal.

BUT, when somebody fixes me something delicious, I EAT it! (Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen too often, however. — the “fixing” part, that is – when they do it is always delicious).

      Thanks Madelyn!
I too find if I weigh daily I know when I need to tighten my control!!! I’ll never be the weight or shape I was in my youth, babies put paid to that! But I am determined not to go the way of many Indian mommas. Widened butts, expanded tummies… Heart attacks waiting to happen with a side of diabetes on the side, sprinkled with high blood pressure!!!
My mum is always the voice of reason for me. She went the Indian Momma way too, but is fighting it now in her late sixties. Yoga every day and walking, and a good diet. It helps to have a yoga I structor husband, even if he is 70!
She tells me if I’m getting ‘cuddly’. She knows the struggles and she’s determined to keep me fit and healthy!!!

        Cuddly – I’m snatching it! 🙂

And from what I read on the ‘net, those yoga instructors only get better with time. Some of the masters are contemporaries of your Mum’s husband – and older.

Reminder to self: restart yoga practice!

My Pops ‘found’ yog after suffering a heart attack, around 12 years ago. It helped him so much that as he retired from dentistry he decided to train as a proper instructor! The yog he does is proper ayurveda yog. It’s about the breathing and obviously all the stretches, (sans lycra and the faddy extras that the west has added to it!)It helped him so much that he wanted to give back to the world. Now he leads several classes and is even on telly regularly on a Sikh channel here in the UK! It’s his ‘seva’, or charity. 😊
He even goes to visit people around the country who need one to one guidance.
        Bless him. 😇🙏

I discovered Yoga on TV when I was a teen – Richard Hittleman’s ‘Yoga for Health’ (with his wife, “the beautiful Diane” – as he always called her, reminding viewers that she was the mother of 5).

I was baby-sitting for the summer (working Mom, so practically a full-time job for me) – and the program came on when my “charge” was still asleep.

I recall my mother sticking up for me when my father wanted me to get into some “real” sports.

I would LOVE a personal instructor. Here in America they charge more than my budget will bear, unfortunately, and group classes in my ‘nabe are at times that don’t work with my sleep disorder. Tapes are great, tho’

I think they charge for a heck of a lot out there! Pops does his classes with a registered charity. 😊

Here in the used-to-be-good-ole’ USA, money madness seems to have infected the masses.

As things continue to increase in cost here, I guess many can’t be blamed for focusing on charging to pay for them. We all have to eat!

That’s such a fantastic result, Ritu! I often find that if you treat yourself on a special occasion and eat the “junk” that we try so hard to cut out, the weight goes up and stays up until the body has leveled it out again. Often it’s actually not a weight gain but in my case fluid that I seem to struggle to get rid of until I’m back in balance (like this week in my case after Halloween and Cup Day). I can tell because my wedding band gets really tight and that only happens due to my body holding back fluids. So in that sense, just go back to eating healthy and not letting get the scale to you is the thing to focus on. I’m really impressed by what you have achieved! Keep it up, girl!

Thank you Sandra!!!! I made sure my weigh in was on a Friday for a reason… I know weekends can be a hard time to stay on plan. When I’m at home I graze… On the wrong things! At work, we have fruit and carrots available at all times. The benefits of working in school! This is meant for the kids but our nursery children don’t always eat as much as is given, so at least if I’m peckish the is healthy stuff!
At home I have plenty of fruit and yoghurt etc available but there are other more tempting things…!
So if I slip up, have takeout, or a meal out, or over indulge, I am extra good all week, until that weigh in! It seems to have worked so far!!!!

Yay, sis! Absolutely fantastically done that you could hold your weight. In the end it is the goal that you simply hold it! I love the food you posted. It all looks so delicious. Knowing that it is healthy too makes it even more yummy in my eyes!

Good for you Ritu. Weight fluctuates which is why you’re discouraged to weigh yourself every day. It didn’t help that the doc/hospital weighs me in kilos and SW in stones and pounds. At home, I can weigh in both plus just pounds, so no problem. I haven’t been to SW this week, but was weighed at the hospital and was the equivalent of a pound lighter than my last weigh in there. I weighed myself today and I’m a kilo lighter than on Monday, though shouldn’t be with all the naughty stuff I’ve been having to boost my reserves. It’ll settle down again now that I’m back on course.
