It’s The Little Things…

Sometimes a chore, a job you have dreaded doing, can result in a little gem appearing.

I have a special bag that I take into school. Not my handbag but my ‘Teacher Bag’. For those of you that don’t know, it is that Mary Poppins-esque bag which holds all manner of things from resources, to special story books, spare stationery to energy boosting snacks and all sorts of other things.

But the thing is I don’t just have one. Yes, I only take one in to school, but at home I had two others, jam packed with useless ful tat resources.

So finally, the other day, I decided that enough was enough. I had to go through them and streamline! The one I carried daily was giving me a back ache and I didn’t use 75% of the items in there daily. They were in there ‘just in case’ and for the last year, that ‘just in case’ moment hadn’t come. It was time to go minimal!

When I tipped the bag contents out, along with crumbs and bits of unreadable paper, there were balloons, water beads, and handouts – lots of handouts! Then the second and third bag revealed around 7 packets of tissues, screwdrivers, hand sanitizer, hair brush, and more handouts! (and resources obviously!) There was a file (or 4) filled with paperwork like class lists (4 years old, so a tad out of date!) and more resource and lesson ideas.

Oh I had fun. The bin was full, and I managed to go from thee bags to two. One is my everyday bag, and there is still more to come out of it, to be filed at school, and the second is my extra school ‘stuff’ that will come in handy one day, but I don’t need it every day!

But my best find?

A character reference about me which had been written by the children in a leaving class a few years ago! It brought a lump to my throat to read, to be honest.

I’ll show you, and hope you can see why!

I have one, too. My bag is heavy and packed with… who knows what. Maybe it’s time to do the same as you did. But, I can’t throw away those priceless notes!

    Aww, that’s super sweet!
A lot of elementary teachers here are carrying the luggage with wheels. I don’t mean backpack size, either. :O

Bags and certain corners are like that… lol! That’s the reason I don’t like changing bags… too much to change… haha. But as you said it is amazing what treasures you can find in there and the one you found is priceless!

Omg! You have bitmoji 😁 I’m so glad I’m not the only one who switches out bags and struggles to find just the right one. Those are a lot of gems Ritu

As I started reading this post, one of my first thoughts was “I hope she alternates the shoulder she’s carries those bags on, or she’s gonna injure her back…” then you mention just that 😉 It’s funny to see all of our baggage we carry through our days sprawled out in front of us. But thank you for the reminder that some of this “baggage” is totally worth it!

I love when I organize all of my crap I have collected over the years for my classroom. It is a great feeling to get organized. I keep a memory box and put especially sweet/thoughtful/funny messages from my students in it. When I am feeling like teaching isn’t for me anymore, I open up the box…

Nice when your charges appreciate you. Hubby had the same thing his first year as a school IT support guy. The sixth form loved him for saving ruined files on incompatible software for their coursework and had a collection at the end of the school year. He was touched beyond measure.
