Sails – #writephoto

Sue’s #Writephoto prompt this week:

windmill at sunset, Brill, Buckinghamshire. Image: Sue Vincent

“I saw a mouse!”
“Where?”
“There on the stair!”
“Where on the stair?”
“Right there!”
“It didn’t by chance have clogs on, did it?”
“No! It was a bloody mouse, you wally!”
Pete smirked to himself. Jane was always such a drama queen, and he had to inject a little humour into their lonely existence.
Since buying the old windmill, and trying to restore it to its original glory, so they could then organise tours around an authentic working old school windmill, Pete and Jane had sunk into a hermit-like existence.
But it had been a tough time. There were no neighbours nearby. They had to drive at least half an hour to the nearest shops in the village, and they were a little too off the beaten track for their friends to visit. Even if they did, there was no guest room for them to stay over, so most people just stayed away.
Sure, they phoned or sent messages once in a while, but it wasn’t the same.
So, when she presented him with opportunities like this, he milked it for all it was worth!
The thing was, there was no one to share the joke with.
This was what happened when you married a young un…
Ronnie Hilton’s 1965 classic was lost on her!

I remember the song too. And the idea of living in a windmill, however remote, really appeals!

I did enjoy this post Ritu. And I remember the song as well…I must be old. As you said in your comment it reminded you of a song as it did with me.
I was also reminded of the novels by Michael Hoeye about a mouse called Hermux Tantamoq. They are delightful stories. Hope your break is going well.

Ok that was the length of our Christmas break though in recent years they managed to reduce it to five weeks. We used to finish school a few days before Christmas so one had to be orgainsed for Christmas before you stopped school to avoid the pre-Christmas rush at the shops….anyway I hope yours is a good break….you teach in the Primary area so I would think you’d be well in need of a break, Primary teachers always seemed to work a lot harder than us High School people.

Thanks Michael! I don’t think it’s necessarily harder.. . But different. Our is possibly more physical with the little ones but our frustrations are like yours.. . Getting attendance up…. dealing with stroppy kids… planning multi level lessons… struggling with getting kids to get “it”!

The ‘it’ is a life long struggle isn’t it….I do stand in awe of you and the tasks you have to do…my SIL is a primary teacher and I know he works hard all the time..he works in a tough school so I know he has to put in the hours….I was ‘lucky’ depending on how you look at it in teaching in high school and in an academically selective school where the kids ‘enjoyed’ coming to school as it was a pathway to them becoming doctor, lawyers and engineers. Plus as a drama teacher it was such fun every day..

Salt of the earth we are…though some years ago I had a job going to primary schools to run drama workshops. the staff would gather and argue over who was going to take notes rather than participate…lol…though at one school a Principal asked me if I had taught drama to an infants class and then informed me that it was my lucky day as I was about to…
