I really like this quote that Spidey found this week.

Is it not true, that failure is not a bad thing, just a trial run, in whatever field you experience it? And because of that failure, you end up learning something, and retaining it for use the next time you try? And if you fail again, you still learn something else that is new!

I guess that is the point of today’s quote. There are people out there who manage to hit the big time, first time round, and they are really lucky. It doesn’t happen for the vast majority of us.

Take a look at the world of celebrity, and how stars who became famous, almost overnight, as child artists, end up on a slippery slope as they grow up, and if they are given independence, they don’t really have a clue about real life, gliding from one bad decision to another.

Then you have people who come to fame a little later in life, and because of the knocks that life has hit them with, they come out stronger people, with lasting power.

It’s similar for us budding authors. Easy to sit and wish that we were going to be able to write a best seller, straight off, like some of the big name authors, and land publishing deals, and have people requesting movie rights… But each knock we have, be it a disappointing critique for your first ever try, to writers block, to the constant rejections from publishers, makes us stronger, better writers.

And how much do we really know about the journey of some of these best selling authors? A lot of them have faced the struggles we do, hence their own learning curve, and then success!

(Can you tell I have writing on the brain, seeing as I am currently trying to write my first ever first draft! #RiNoWriMo)

    You are completely correct, Ritu. Everything we do in life requires effort and hard work. To become a Chartered Accountant, I had to study for 5 years and do articles for 3 years. To write must, I assume, also take time and effort. I remember reading somewhere that most things we achieve in life take 10% talent and 90% hard work. Happy writing.

    I am always falling, both literally and figuratively, Sis. It does not occur to me to just stay where I am feeling sorry for myself, I want to get up and keep going trying to find a different way to keep upright!
    We all have our own ideas off success too. Although I admire JK Rowling immensly and what she had achieved. However, it is very difficult for her to be able to slip into obscurity now. She has almost become ‘public property’ and everything she says or does comes under such immense scrutiny, even the way she looks or dresses. I know I couldn’t cope with that kind of intrusion into my life.
    You are already a very successful woman in so many ways Sis, and just the fact that you are writing a novel now, is a massive achievement. xxx

    So true. But I think that when it comes to something like writing, sometimes we are led to believe what we have accomplished is a failure (such as a publisher) when that is their opinion, not a statement of fact. How many writers were recognized as great only after they have left their mortal coil. Did JK Rowling really fail when Harry Potter anuscript was rejected a by publisher?

    There is a saying, “What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger”. Unfortunately, there is real truth to that saying. So, if the inherent rejection involved in writing hasn’t killed the author’s desire to write, the product certainly will grow stronger.

    I couldn’t agree more. We need to risk the fall in order to know how to rise! That’s why I also don’t like to talk about failure. We don’t fail, we make experiences. Without experience, we cannot grow. As Edison said: “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

    So often the path isn’t what it seems. J K Rowling is an excellent example of one who appeared to just appear like a shooting star from no-where… and then you read the backstory. Every knock every setback is a lesson and an inspiration if we allow it to be. You clearly understand that so I rather think when the board game lands you on a ladder not a slippery snakes tail you will climb boldly to the top of the ramparts and grab success firmly and resolutely. Keep doing what you do 😊
