Can I Ask A Question? – Video Related – Upload or Embed?

Hey all! Looking for some advice today!

So, I can upload videos to my WP account to embed into my posts. Recently, they upload, but won’t play in my posts…

So, I am looking at setting up a different account with an outside video hoster to use embed codes.

I have a YouTube account but I don’t use it to post videos. If I was to use it, I don’t necessarily want the videos to be available for everyone to search, but if the clip is on my post I want you, my Peeps, to be able to view.

Do I need to upload using the Unlisted tag, not the Public, or Private?

Is that possible?

Or is Vimeo better?

Or any other suggestions?

NO idea. Sorry. I have often wanted to upload videos and couldn’t figure it out, and certainly didn’t want to pay more. Good luck 🙂

I’ve had mixed results with youtube videos, they load and play, and sooner or later, they disappear. Vimeo seems more reliable for me. Good luck.

I always choose upload or embed when adding videos, why, I have no idea, sometimes I just C&P the link into the body of the post, and sometimes that works and sometimes not. Using both depending on the situation works best for Moi.

I’d consider setting up a ‘But I Smile Anyway’ YouTube account. That way, all your content is blog based, and you still have the option, should you need it one day, of uploading personal videos to your personal account. It also gives you the option of expanding BISA into YouTube! 😀

In regards to wondering if someone unintentional will see your videos, nobody is ever really going to stumble on a YouTube video, so many get uploaded everyday there are so many that get absolutely zero hits. The only video on my own account I uploaded purely for Friends, it’s a public video, but it only has 40 hits in 10 years, and I bet you at least 39 are me and my friends watching it every now and again!

That said, if the videos are clearly for use on your blog, under a blog account, if anyone DOES manage to stumble, it might be an extra reader waiting to happen! That said, I think ‘unlisted’ does this for you, by meaning people can’t randomly land on your video in the search engine, and means you can only find the video with a link (Not sure how it effects embedding or not, but I doubt it does, I think that’s its main purpose really; for things like this).

I definitely wouldn’t keep my videos on WordPress, not only is it too limited, it’ll eat away your space until you have nothing left!

We only insert a video by url, Ritu and mostly when my furriends can’t see them, Granny has to make them public, but these are purrsonal videos about me that I make in YouToube first 😀 Good Luck Pawkisses with the experiment 🙂 ❤

Can I ask a question? In your busy life as wife, Mother and infant teacher where do you find time for all the blogging you do? When I was teaching I barely found time for anything except (on a good day) a 20 minute run round a local lake and park!!, a d I had o children demanding my attention

If it’s Youtube, I just copy and paste the link to my post.

Is this option available on a free site? I did try a while ago and it told me to go away and upgrade but have seen one on another site and I know it is free..Perhaps I will ask them. But the storage comment was a valid one 🙂

Ritu I am not sure about this, but I think you need an upgraded business version for posting videos. But it costs money, some 100 dollars a year

I personally wouldn’t recommend uploading many videos to WordPress… I find it tends to be a bit hit and miss and uses up too much storage to be worth it anyway. Particularly with 4K now, it’s easy to have nothing left!

I think your best option here would be to open a new YouTube account so it’s separate from your personal one and upload them there as unlisted. They’ll still be viewable so you should still be able to embed them on WP but it should stop them from being searchable on YouTube and as it’s a new account, it’ll be less likely that other people might stumble across them accidentally.

You could do it with Vimeo as well but if you’re more familiar with YouTube, I’d recommend that. Hope that helps. 🙂

Yes use the unlisted link on youtube, then just embed the link into your post, only those with access to it can view it, it wont come up in searches on youtube if unlisted. xxx

I find that I prefer a video to a link if it is just there on the page and press play. It plays, I’m happy. Most of these I find work. niaphotography and Erika kind post a lot of lovely music vids. I just copy a YouTube link and paste it at the top of my post. Simple is best to my mind. Whether this helps or not I know not. I don’t go too technical (perhaps I am a relic) G:)
