“How many screens does a child really need? Just one, and that should be filtering the language coming out of their mouths!” – Ritu
Thinking about what we hear children from young ages talking about and the language they use on a day to day basis. Access to phones, tablets, computers and TVs mean that they are exposed to far too much that is not always age appropriate, and it is not always possible to be there to censor what they watch, especially as they get a little older.
One 3-year-old child told me all about heart surgery, and that he saw the operation… on YouTube. Not really the right thing for him to watch, but at least he wasn’t watching it live…
My two often use slang and silly words that they pick up off the V-Loggers they watch, and thankfully it isn’t usually offensive, but there are times I have to question what they watch and stamp on it.
But when a 3-year-old tells someone to F-off, or a 5-year-old says he wants to kill you… you gotta worry about what he is hearing and where… Is it on screens, or in real life?

it’s really sad what kids these days are exposed to. I agree with you that sometimes the vloggers on youtube who have such a huge fan base can have a negative impact on the kids.

Oh God that must be a real struggle lol. Some of my little cousins back in India are also influenced so much by these youtubers and other things around them. They sometimes end up speaking in this strange accent that they pick up from all over the world 😆a complete mash up of all cultures!

I guess we can offer positive alternatives. But yeah it’s scary. I wonder if some parents think it’s funny and reinforce the awfulness.

It is shocking what some of the kids come out with today. Actually even some of the youngsters I am with at Uni think nothing of bandying with ‘C’ word around!! I know I am getting on a bit but to me that it just too much!

Yes, it is a worry……to keep tight control on children on their accessibility is also difficult all the times……the best thing which can be done on regular basis is to make them aware of the best and positive things of life……

It is scary when the real world and the virtual world are becoming one in a little child’s world. They cannot differ and feel it all as real. Very scary!

Many mainstream movies and TV episodes too have 4 letter words used liberally and quite unnecessarily most of the time. It’s easy for anyone to get influenced actually.

So many avenues of influence and we know how impressionable kids can be (and some adults too).

It’s not a pretty world out there for children and, unfortunately, they see and hear way too much of it.

That’s sad. That tells me that there isn’t enough adult supervision. When children this young end up in the wrong direction, an adult has failed.

True… and funding here means we can’t employ more adults in school to counteract!

As I see these challenges, kids today are much more controlled than we were for many years ago, where there were no mobiles and many didn’t even have a phone in the house. It seems like, kids can watch everything inside the house with very little or no control, but going outside seem to be more dangerous.
Today, many kids don’t get much outside without control from adults.
