Lose Your Stress ‘Write’ Away!

There are days and times in life when you feel you can’t go on.

Times you think that nothing you do can make life better.

I have been through periods  like that several times in my years, and look at me. I’m still here. I didn’t give up. It didn’t kill me. It made me stronger.

Some problems are just there, and there isn’t much we can do. It may be the way a person behaves or how a situation is affecting you. These reasons are often beyond our control.

One of the things that I found really helped me was to write.

I’m not talking about creative writing. That is one of my passions, yes, and it can really calm me, but it doesn’t take the stress or problem away.

So, how can you address them?

Write a letter.

But it doesn’t have to go anywhere.

When I was at university, there where huge issues within my family. I was helpless, but watching folk raising Hell, and others close to me crumbling under the pressure. Not just them, it was affecting me too.

So I wrote a letter. A long letter. I poured all my feelings out onto paper. All my hurt, all my confusion came gushing out. Things I didn’t want to burden my parents with, as they were already stressed enough. Words I wanted to use but would never be able to really say to the person this letter was directed at.

And then I put it in an envelope, sealed it and filed it away.

Did it make the problems go away?

No.

But it really helped me cope. I felt unburdened by the stress and worry that had been eating away at me. I knew it was still there, but the fact I had rid myself of it once, meant I was better able to cope with the reality as it progressed.

And the other day I did the same. This time my fingers danced over the keyboard, as my worries about a certain situation I am currently in now, appeared on the screen in front of me.

This time, I was determined to deliver this ‘letter’ to the person it was directed at though. In fact that was my original intention. I even printed it out.

But I remembered the cathartic effect of writing away your problems and as I wrote, the situation that was feeling overly stressful, started to seem not so bad.

It’s still sat in my bag actually.

I may still, if I’m brave enough, decide to try and broach the subjects that came up within the letter with the person involved. This time it’s not about a behaviour, but a situation, where I see solutions glaring me in the face, and yet those in charge are not seeing them.

But then again, I might not.

Because I may rock the boat a little too much. Still, at least I feel like I’ve got my ‘rant’ out of my system now!

So, if you feel stressed or unhappy about anything, try writing a letter to get it out of your system. You don’t have to send it anywhere, it is purely for you and your well being.

Honestly, it helps!

This is why I started my blog to get things out of my head and try to cope.

Love this post!…It is very well-written and helpful…If you’re feeling stressed, pop some pistachios. Researchers at Penn State University found that when people added an ounce and a half of pistachio nuts to their diet, their blood pressure plunged by nearly five points! The secret is in all the plant sterols and antioxidants, which reduce the body’s stress hormones. So fill up a shot glass full of shelled pistachios each day – and relax!…https://www.nearariver.com/feel-better-right-now-near-river-bj-rae-eagle-encouraging-words/…BJ, author of near a river

Wow, I love this! I find writing very therapeutic and when you write down your worries, you don’t have to think about them as much. Great post! What I also do to reduce stress is clean and declutter. I find it relaxing and it takes my mind away from my worries. I wrote a post about what to declutter as a college student if you’re interested. Thanks!

I haven’t thought about writing a letter to a person/situation before. I can totally relate to being stressed about something, but cant do anything about it at all. Like missing a bus, or having a mean boss. I’m still learning how to cope with my stress and as you’ve mentioned writing it out may just shrink it’s burden. I can understand that sometimes keeping things to yourself, like you’ve done to prevent stressing your parents, might seem the best decision at certain times. To feel like I’ve shared my burden through writing is a great idea! And it can sit in my drawer, even better! I’ll definitely try it out, thank you for suggesting this!

I haven’t blogged in years. I used to be a member of a site called Xanga that went out about 4 yrs ago. Yesterday I logged in here because I was so stressed I needed an outlet. Just a quick, few paragraphs. More for me than for anyone else to read as I have few followers. It did make me feel better. So today I came back for a few more paragraphs. Nothing profound or super interesting. But for myself again. I then searched stress and found this blog. Thank you for this! It is exactly what I needed to read tonight!

I agree with you. This type of writing can help you to feel immense relief. I do mine in a journal where I can write as honestly as I please, since it’s for my eyes only. I also find the same relief from writing fiction, too though.

Hi, thought I’d let you know…I’ve started my ‘letter’ as I said I would and though its very rambly at the moment it is helping. I am letting myself be totally honest in a way I’ve done in my head many many times so typing them down is cathartic!!! Thanks!

I take it one more step. I write the letter and then I burn it, releasing the worries, anger, sadness etc. into the universe to be absorbed back into the collective energies. It’s worth a try 🙂

When I broke up with my first REAL boyfriend I wrote him a very long letter. I wondered if I should send it, agonized over it. Eventually I did. Later, he told me he read it, but he threw it away. At first, that hurt a little. But I realized the letter really hadn’t been for him. I was trying to provide him all the solutions to his “problems” that negatively impacted me during our relationship. He had no use for them. Many, many years later, I wish I’d kept the letter to myself. Your point, that sometimes these things are just for ourselves, reminded me of that little regret of mine. Whatever you decide to do with your letter, I’m sure you’ll learn a lot. Thank you for sharing!

Just getting your feelings down on paper can in I self be therapeutic. Then you’ve got a list of things to work through in small bites which is the easiest way to tackle stressful things

I haven’t written actual letters to not mail. Instead, I’ve poured it all out in journals. It helps.
