A Grown Up Evening! (With a recipe thrown in for Jeera Chicken Wings!)

Yesterday I spent the evening at my friend’s house.

Some of you may recall me mentioning my group of mummy friends, the Tootie Frooties!

Well, one of the yummy mummies has recently moved house and there have been a few of us who celebrated birthdays over the last two months. It was a get together to celebrate the new house, birthdays, and a great excuse to cook up a storm and enjoy each other’s company, despite coughs, colds, kids, and work the next day!

We were missing two Tootie Frooties!

We all brought drinks and a dish.

Me, being so grown up, opted for the Coco Pops Spoon… just because!

Most of us also brought the extra addition of kids!

One of the things we discussed over dinner was the fact that this night, though it didn’t involve going out to some fancy bar or club, was what we all preferred. A chilled evening with the music of our choice pulsing through the sound system, good food, good company, and the ease of being able to have the kids milling around, not worrying about babysitters. They were perfectly happy causing their own version of havoc, while we cackled like a coven of (rather glam) witches in the kitchen!

All in all, a pretty grown-up affair, don’t you think?

Oh, and here’s what I made!

Mine was Butter Jeera Chicken Wings!

What’s the recipe? Well, I’ll tell you all!

Now I cook by Andaaza. Please forgive me, but there are no amounts for the ingredients, as my mum uses andaazaThis basically is when you just know! It’s a skill I think many mothers hone over the years while cooking the family favourite dishes!

I used

20 pieces of chicken (wings)
Butter
Olive Oil
Cumin Seeds
Garlic
Ginger
Fresh red chillis
Salt
A Little Natural Yoghurt
Garam Masala
Lemon Juice

Honestly, it is so simple, and really tasty!

  • Add the butter and oil to a wok or large pan and allow to cook together. Both fats together stop each other from burning,
  • Once hot add around two teaspoons of cumin, ginger, garlic, chillis and salt. Allow to cook for a few minutes.
  • Add the chicken, stirring so all the pieces are coated with the spices.
  • Add a tablespoon of natural yoghurt to allow the chicken to keep its moistness.
  • When the chicken is almost cooked, add around two teaspoons of garam masala and a few squirts of lemon juice.
  • Allow the chicken to cook thoroughly.
  • Enjoy!

And I think everyone enjoyed!

I hope you enjoy too!

Happy Friday Peeps! I’m off to try and control my eating for the next week, to make up for the calorific content of my diet yesterday!

I used to think going “clubbin” (my millenial sister has told me I’m not allowed to use that term anymore) was the gold standard. That a weekend wasn’t full of excitement if it didn’t involve dancing and drinking. Like you, I much prefer hanging out at someone else’s house while the kids run around like crazy people!

“Andaaza” – there is finally a word for ‘measuring-by-eye’! I’m adding that word to my vocabulary. My husband and I cook at home every day, and we often ‘wing’ the ingredients, so this word will come in handy. 🙂 Also, your chicken recipe looks amazing. We will have to make this one soon. With those ingredients, even this kids are bound to love it. Last, you are so lucky to have such a huge group of girlfriends. Looked like a wonderful night!

A laid back evening of food, girlfriends, and a chance for the tots to play with one another is such a warm magical kind of night. 💚

That looks absolutely fabulous, Ritu! I’ll have to give it a go and I completely understand the andaaza thing.

My mom first introduced the word “aggaration” to me when I was still a novice. In Malay, “agak-agak” means estimation. So there! A bastardised English word that’s equivalent to andaaza! 😊

That looks yummy! I’ll have to try it out. Though I quite hate the andaaza method. I used to watch mom cooking with a hawk eye and force her to use spoons to add in masalas so I could write down exact measurements!

Having fun with friends with what looks to be the most delicious food ever sounds like a great night. I agree, none of us need big fancy dinners out, we just need connection with people that matter. It made me smile to see your posed pic of all the “yummy mummies.”

Honestly, I’m definitely at the stage where I much prefer a night in with friends (and good food & booze of course) to a night out in bars etc. Sounds like you all had a lovely time x

Looks delicious, Ritu! And I also love getting together with friends around someone’s house. I’m much happier being comfy indoors than having to sort out getting home from being out in a busy town/city. I also think the act of everyone pitching in with food and drink makes it a more shared experience 🙂

I actually prefer a night in with good food and drinks than going out. You can actually hear other when you’re talking and I think it’s just a nicer catchup with friends. Lovely post.

This is the perfect evening really!! You can all still get glammed up, enjoy some wine and good food – and the kids all have fun together too. Everybody wins! That kitchen looks incredible by the way. So much space!

OMG! Your group of friends has a name, the Tootie Frooties. I love this… because mine do, too. We’re the Mermatrons (too old to be mermaids). The day we came up with the name is a story in itself. There are eight of you, seven of us. It is THE best. We have been BFF’s since our kids sang together in a choral group when they were young (sang at Harrods and St. Martin-in-the-Field). Now our kids have kids. So, go Tootie Frooties!

I never knew there was a name for that ability to ‘just know’. Nick, with his desire to know ‘how much and how long’ when I cook just hates me when I can’t say anything except… I don’t know. But you just do 🙂

I love getting together for food and friends! I belong to a group that graduated high school in 1966 (!) who still live in the old hometown who get together this way. It’s a blessing to be friend, to have friends that long! May you have your little group that long as well, Ritu! Of course, if you continue bringing food like this, you surely will! (Looks really tasty! Best of all, it gives me a better idea how to use that bottle of Garam Masala I bought out of curiosity.)

I tried it in something, based on how it tasted and what I thought it might work in, but the experiment must have been a failure or underwhelming because I can’t remember what it was! Anyway, seeing how your used it with garlic, etc., gives me a better sense of how to go with it.

It’s definitely something to spice up your Indian dishes if you cook many of them!
