December 7 – Flash Fiction – Performance – Nativity

Charli’s prompt this week:

December 7, 2017 prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write that features a performance. You can interpret what is a performance any way the prompt leads you.

December 7 Flash Fiction Challenge at Carrot Ranch @Charli_Mills

Well, being as I work in school teaching, this time of year is filled with performances! We have the Nursery Christmas singing to parents, the Reception Nativity, the KS1 alternative Nativity, then Lower KS 2 and Upper KS 2 hold their performances of Christmas songs from around the world too!

I am personally involved in the Nursery and Reception performance preparations this year, and I have to say, my throat is hurting from the over singing we have to do, to compensate for the vast majority of the kids who stand and do nothing!

So it goes without saying that my piece for the week would be influenced by my day job!

Nativity

“Come on children, nice and loud now! Please no shouting – it’s singing we want to hear.”
Mrs Keeble started the intro on the school piano, and nodded to the class in front of her.
As usual, there were the performers: the children who thought they were born for the stage. There were the skulkers: the ones who stood at the back, heads down, hoping no one would notice them. And then there were the stunned: the ones who stood there, gawping, no sound leaving their mouths, eyes scanning the audience for family.
Wonderful!
Welcome to another infant Christmas performance!

You use your experience well to capture a lovely scene of infants on stage. Wonderful flash, Ritu! I horrifically made the town newspaper in my Nativity Scene performance. As a 4-year-old, I was dressed as an angel, complete with tinselled halo, but I was so shy I chose to hide behind my skirts by hitching them up over my head! Yes — that photo went into the newspaper! Ugh!

Ha ha! Oh Charli, I guess you’re lucky we didn’t have all the Social Media them or you would have gone viral!!!!
Children’s performances are the best, not necessarily for the right reasons!
I have my Nursery class doing their Christmas singing to parents today – x2 as we have a morning session and an afternoon session, so will be hoarse this evening, as they will all go quiet and we will have to carry the songs! But it will be cute!!!! 🙂

Oh, thank goodness we had no internet back then! I just received a video clip from friends in Montana and their granddaughter was in a school performance today at the pre-school level. She was part of the “adoration crew” around the Nativity Scene while the older grades took turns at the stage. Their granddaughter stole the show when she decided Baby Jesus needed to dance! I hope your show is just as vibrant and you can rest your vocal cords afterward! ❤

Bless my little sweethearts! Both sessions actually performed and sang – well most of them! Of course we had to add a little ‘volume’ but they did so well, and no crying or running to parents either!!!!
Now I can chill a little, until it’s time for the Christmas party on Wednesday!!!! Christmassy stories and lots of glitter all the way!!!!

Aw, you must feel so satisfied seeing your little ones perform, helping with their volume! Enjoy the stories and glitter next.

Beautiful. I have a vinyl record of my own pre school christmas performance. I can pick the performers, skulkers and stunned quite easily. Thanks for the Christmas memory.

Totally reminds me of the performances of my kids’ classes! LOL! So, the groups of kids are still the same… so funny!

Hi Ritu! I have nominated you to post your five favorite children’s books. Of course you don’t have to participate. Just posted it on my blog titled “Five of the Best Children’s Books”.

I can only imagine how chaotic directing such young kids would be, but not if they were obedient and docile like we used to be as kids 🙂

Wow, does this take me back… I was a bit older when we did school performances such as this (at least that I recall) and I was one of the performers. Not a showy, stand out, just one of the chorus. 🙂

I think I’ve seen that class in action before Ritu….when my kids were little their dance concerts were a bit like that, some keen, some keeping up and some lost with no idea of what was going on.

I remember those school Christmas pageants. It’s A LOT of work for the teachers. But, the children look really cute, and the parents are always so proud. 🙂
