Exacerbatingly Exasperating! #MondayBlogs

Last night, as is the norm in this house, Lil Princess was being a bit of a diva.

And, true to form, as she was moaning, Lil Man was adding his ten pence worth in too, winding her up even more.

Mad momma face!

We were trying to eat a family dinner, and as he laughed at his sister, he dropped food.

Me: “Can you just stop? Why do have to exacerbate the situation?

Lil Man: “What?”

Hubby Dearest: “That’s not even a word!”

Cue giggles from the kids.

Hubby Dearest: [feeling smug] “You mean exasperate, don’t you?”

Me: ” Are you questioning me? A writer?” {I mean, really!}

Cue more giggling.

I got up from the table and went to the bookshelf, which is conveniently located right in the dining area. Extracting the dictionary from it’s home, I leafed through the pages and found exasperate… but exacerbate was not there…

No no no!

I knew it was a word, I knew the meaning, but I couldn’t find it! I had to show him!

Then, there it was.

Me: ” See! Exasperate – to irritate intentionally, and look, there – Exacerbate – to make a situation worse!”

Hubby Dearest: ” Yeah, right, whatever…”

Lil Man was sat next to me smirking. Lil Princess looking at her daddy, giggling.

Me: ” And you two, stop being exacerbatingly exasperating, and finish your dinner!”

I knew I was right!

The rest of the meal proceeded with various versions of this new to them word being bandied about, predominantly in the wrong context!

I think I should start a word of the day for the family!

How… exasperating 😤😬 Kid are a trip and a half, if they can ignore the truth in favor of their own, they will. It’s nuts! A word of the day sounds good! No dessert until you can use the word in a sentence properly!

PS, I knew exacerbate because it is used a lot in medical terminology – making an illness worse.

LOL a word a day is a great idea! Sorry about the kids. I had the same issues at times, even today and they are adults!

    Smug pleasure😊
Knew the word but hardly use it.
Even if the word is not there, a writer should have a license to invent one. Otherwise how a language is going to progress. God did not give us all the word.

One of my favorite words. My husband was so proud of his vocabulary, he’d correct anyone at anytime. It is a wonder he still has all his teeth…

Reminds me of some of my own predicament when I used the more refined french words that I had learnt to use with my father and that most people around me found too complicated.

This is great, Ritu! I can see the whole scene, and how you had to prove your point. And, here’s to the good old dictionary. That says nobody had cell phones at the dinner table to google the word. Cheers all the way around! 👍👏🏻🙂

Humungous kudos to you for sticking up for your own knowledge. It’s not your fault that you know big words. You’re a teacher! 🙂

A writer has to be right and if we need to call it artistic license, right? 😄

Wow, I love the way you describe the situation.
I came across this word, exacerbate, during my SAT (SHOLISTIC APTITUDE TEST) preparations. 😀
    It’s bit difficult to pronounce.
Btw, I salute you for managing to speak those two words together. 😀
