Tweenage Tidbits -Dry Humping and Pre-Marital Sex #TheBirdsAndTheBees #TidbitTuesday

You must have known this post was coming.

After announcing that we had, as parents, received that letter, this post was inevitable.

Lil Princess has finally started her PSHE topic for this term, namely Sex Ed!

Of course, she knew all about it, apparently!

But it has sparked plenty of girl to girl chats between us.

She tells me they’ve had another embarrassing chat every time the subject is covered.

So, they’ve covered anatomy, inside and out. And that in itself has caused plenty of giggles.

She’s learned about what puberty means for both a girl and a boy, and is obsessed with working out what an Adam’s Apple is!

She’s desperately searching for changes in herself, almost wishing it to happen now!

But today was funny.

“Oh mummy, we had to watch a video today. Like, I saw how they make a baby! My teacher said it’s enjoyable! Ew!”

Er, what?

I’m not sure that should be part of the conversation!

A little later, she mentioned the video again. “So like they were just there, like, doing it. All of a sudden, they were dry humping-”

Wait, what? You are ten years old girl, what do you know about dry humping, or humping, in fact?

“I don’t know,” she said, “One of my friends whispered to me that that was what they were doing!”

So, do I correct her, and explain the difference between dry, and usual humping?

We had a little conversation…

Then she explained her teacher’s comment about enjoying ‘it’ too.

“Well mummy, he said that it had to be an enjoyable thing, otherwise the human race would be extinct!”

True dat.

“Anyway,” she continued, “I don’t know how he knows anyway, it’s not like he’s married yet or anything…”

Still a little innocent regarding pre-marital sex, and that is something I shan’t correct, just yet… She’s still my baby after all!

So funny….one of the weirdest phases of parenthood definitely. I sat my son down to have the talk and he asked me if we could take a break until the next day. He said this is just a lot to process! Good luck!

It has been so different discussing with my daughter, as opposed to my son. He’s now 12 and still giggles, and gets a little embarrassed… My 10 year old daughter wants to get down to the nitty gritty, and isn’t afraid at all to ask questions, no matter now awkward lol!

I can’t believe they showed how to do it to 10 year olds, even if it was a clean way. It was just told to use and I was in the 10th grade. We did however watch a baby being born in a class film.

Oh man! 🤦🏼‍♀️ this is coming for me too, our son is almost 10 and has been asking so many questions. It stops me in my tracks and I have to think about what I can say in a way he will understand.

My Dear Ritu, Your writing just cracks me up! I love it that you make me laugh! Having had two daughters I never had to engage in the conversations and questions you are having to deal with – at 10??? I guess it’s better to hear facts than rumors and myths??? Really a great post! Still smiling!

People would fall out and die here if we went over anything besides anatomy and hormonal changes! It’s certainly a different world!

Way different from when I was growing. Then it was called health class and my teacher (an older man) spent more time on the health aspect like teaching CPR than on how the sex organs worked. This was 9th grade. In 5th grade, the girls had already been separated out for their 1-day class on menstruation, while the boys got to watch cartoons. Talk about being singled out.

My poor kids grew up with an ER nurse for a mom….they learned more than they ever wanted to I am sure. But,it also meant that nothing was off limits to discuss and questions were always answered opening and honestly.

Oh gosh so it begins. My mam was always really open and honest with me and we had good frank conversations when I was older. Yes it’s embarrassing and uncomfortable for both of you but it’s important that you child feels they can talk to you. I think you’ll be fine!

I believe if they actually ask we have to answer as honestly as we can. I remember no1 son asking me what masturbate was so … a deep breath was taken before I began, then after the silence ebbed in to scraping of chair legs on the Maple floor, he raised himself to his feet and with a very pink face aaid. “Well it may have been that in the olden days but it is not what it means now!” But the truth was told in the most sensative way that I could deliver it. sigh Nothing really prepares you for the vagaries on motherhood.

It happens to the best of us, Ritu. Michael asked me a few years ago how many wives he could have. Our president at the time had more than one as is allowed in Zulu culture. I told him one.

I would have to correct her/him in knowing what the word they used means. What a subject hard for parents to discuss with our innocent children… After five kids (Youngest 11) it is still hard to talk about.

I can vividly remember my daughter coming home from school with the announcement “Today we learned how babies are made” (Giggle. Giggle). She looked at her brother, and back at us “You guys have done IT twice!”

I can relate. My ten year old daughter asked us what ‘balls’ were the other day. She said she heard a fifth grader saying that he was going to kick someone there and asked if that is another form of kickball. Answering these questions can be difficult.

I’m with David! I think you need an in depth blog post on dry humping haha. How lovely that she can talk to you about this. My mum left a library book on my bed one day and left me to it!! It was a taboo subject in our house (Catholics for you!!) but I made sure I was open and honest with my three kids and that’s helped them in many areas of their life – not just sex and relationships. xxx

And what that may be? Never had a sex ed class, nor did any one tell about the birds and the bees. Just imagine middle aged parents in India discussing these with their kids 30 – 40 years back.

I know… I ask my mum and mum in law about their times at that age, and they say the same!
My parents were pretty cool and being educated here, I got the whole lowdown.
My mum went to a good school in Kenya, so she was taught, but not by her own mother.
My mum in law had to just learn about it all through experience!
And I still had cousins who were embarrassed to discuss, so I have had the educating duty with several younger members of my family too!

Oh my David, it is just funny, especially when they don’t actually know the meaning of the phrases and words… and are at an age when they don’t really need to know, but to save on embarrassment you feel you need to explain, just a little, so they don’t use it inappropriately at the wrong time!
They will forever remain our babies, though I have a while to get mine to their 40’s!
