Spidey’s Serene Sunday – Part 209

“It’s not how we fall, its how we get back up again.”

Patrick Ness

Thanks Spidey.

Apt.

Okay, so I’ve had a bit of a week of it.

Things going down that have almost knocked me sideways, in professional, writing and personal life.

I won’t dwell on them though.

I will learn from them.

And I will get back up, be a better version of me as a result.

So… tell me, how do you handle situations that knock you for six?

Sorry. Sure hope it’s better now. I had a Frosty (that’s kind of like soft ice cream meets a malt) and I will soon have a hot bath. Those things help me feel better, and of course, a hot cuppa and a good sleep.

It’s hard sometimes to get back up when something knocks you down. I like to give myself a pep talk and draw some strength from friends and family where possible too.

I started the past week out splendidly and created a very happy valentine, a good gift, a good meal and a totally happy experience for my Valentine to whom I’ve been married for 54 years. I had a lovely lunch out with girlfriends Wednesday, then Thursday afternoon, everything went down, down, down. I became prideful, and egotistical, and “full of myself.” Then The Good Lord “took me to the woodshed’ (an old country term of getting a “whopping” usually from one’s father). The result was I became depressed and anxious over how I’d thought I was “big stuff,” lacked confidence in myself as a driver (Yes, I scraped my car–didn’t even make it out of the garage!), and felt old, incapable, and useless all day Friday and Saturday. I am just now starting to crawl out of the hole I fell into. Maybe a Sunday night concert we plan to attend will pep me back up. Tomorrow is a holiday (Presidents’ Day), so hopefully, I can get some things done that will restore me to my former self.

Since my early teenage years, I developed an attitude to always look beyond the struggle. Although I have found myself in very challenging life situations over and over again, I have never lost the ability to reflexively look out for the liana of something good to hold on to until I was standing on stable ground again. Everything in life is temporary and not meant to linger unless we hold on to it.

Yes, it is true that you learn more from what goes wrong than what goes right, but it’s also nice to learn a little less and be happy sometimes as well…Tom Hanks (yes, TOM HANKS) told me once: “don’t ever let yourself get too high, because there will always be a low” – this was after he hadn’t worked for two years…yes, that happened to him and he said he got through it by knowing it was ebb and flow and he had to just keep going and let the tide turn again…

My way is like yours, I can only move forward and can only take lessons from the past, not change it. Make sure the lessons are well learned but carry the new wisdom gained to apply to your new day.
    Best wishes Ritu.

That is the best approach to life, Ritu, to learn from adversity.
