March 28: Flash Fiction Challenge – Eminence

Charli’s prompt this week:

March 26, 2019, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less) write a story that uses the word eminence. It’s a rich word full of different meanings. Explore how it sounds or how you might play with it. Go where the prompt leads!

Feeling Like A Fraud

“Jill, could you just glance over this, please?”

Nancy thrust a piece of paper in Jill’s hand.

“I’d really appreciate your opinion. Would you mind?”

“Sure, why not.”

Jill smiled and turned around, surreptitiously rolling her eyes.

Ever since her book had been released and had shot to the top ten in the charts, she’d been inundated with ‘friends’ who wanted her advice on their writing. It’s like her eminence in word craft meant she was now a fully-fledged expert.

But that was furthest from the truth.

All she’d done was write from the heart.

And readers had appreciated.

You understand the magic that every writer has the ability to conjure — writing from the heart. But it is also the most vulnerable writing to do!. I have watched you absolutely blossom ever since you finished your manuscript. You write with greater focus, you lead other writers, you push through the grueling editing process. And you know why? Not because you’ve achieved eminence or figured out the code. You accessed your own magic and found your authentic voice. This flash sums it up!

I had thought about this conundrum before! I think it’s unfair to think that any certain path to writing success is going to be climbed ever again, so it’s fair for Jill to feel frustrated.

Every week now I get the flash fiction word and I begin to think about writing something. Then you post yours and I go “damn, I have to try harder!” Great work again.
