Where do you think I am, right now?

Actually, if you are a regular reader, you might just remember me mentioning it in my Chai catch up on Monday. (Don’t cheat and find the post – I’m just about to tell you…)

I am in Birmingham for the weekend. (As in the real Birmingham, not the one named after our original Brum in 1871!)

Birmingham is my home town. It’s where I was born. And when I die, there will be a plaque, somewhere here saying “Birthplace of famous writer, Ritu Bhathal (nee Padhaal)”

What?

I can dream, can’t I?

Where was I?

Oh yes, I’m back home, spending a couple of nights with my Pops, kids in tow, before he ventures out to Finland, to join my mum, and his wife, who has been gallivanting helping to look after the grandchildren out there.

No matter where I live, I have to say, Birmingham will always be home to me.

Feel comfortable
Always an open door
Where all is familiar
No matter what the address is
You see, my true home will always be
The place where I find my Pops and my Mum

Yes, my marital home is home too. But it’s a different kind of home and comfort. Another home filled with love.

But my childhood home was filled with so many precious memories, that if you want me to be honest about where I call my home… thats’s where…

    I feel the same about my parents’ home and my grandparents’ home. I stay in a different city altogether due to my job. There’s something special about the place where you grew up, isn’t it?

    My mum and dad have lived in the same house for 46 years, so I do understand what you mean about ‘home’ – and it’s where we’re temporarily living again now, my husband and I, while we house-hunt for OUR new home together 🙂

    I agree, home is not only one place. Throughout the lifetime we leave so many breadcrumbs where we are walking. I feel home where I live today, in my hometown Vienna, in Buffalo where we lived, in California and where the people are who have a part of my heart. It is wonderful to feel home all over the globe.

    Love this post, Ritu. I sometimes feel guilty about still considering my home state of Ohio “home,” because I haven’t lived there since I was 19–before I knew my husband and before kids, the things that make my current home. I don’t truly know my birthplace as it is now, but those memories are a strong pull on the heartstrings. And I get back as often as I can, though it’s about 7 hours from here!

    I haven’t lived in my hometown in over 40 years, but it will always have a special place in my heart and hold the fondest of memories. I’m glad you are able to spend time with your pops and be at home in Birmingham.

    How interesting, Ritu, that you think of your parents home as your real home. I lived in 21 different houses as a child so, while I adore my folks, there was not continuity or security in my childhood.

      I was born in one house but we moved before my brother arrived on the scene. That was my home until I got married. I left from there as a married woman. I guess that’s security.
      But they live in a different house now, yet still, that will always be home because that’s where they are 🥰
      I can’t imagine moving around so much. Equal measures of fun and difficulties, I guess.
