January 9: Flash Fiction Challenge – Over The Threshold

Charli’s Carrot Ranch 99 word fiction prompt this week:

January 9, 2019, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story about a carried wife. Why is she being carried? Who is carrying? Pick a genre if you’d like and craft a memorable character. Go where the prompt leads!

Nina giggled as Rakesh swept her up into his arms.

“Come on, Wifey, let’s get you inside.”

“Stop it!” She jumped down as soon as they stepped over the threshold, and turned towards him. “Why did you carry me over? We’re not English, you know!”

“Oh, I thought that’s what people do when they get married.”

“Have you never been to an Indian wedding before? Come on. I know you were born in the US, but surely you know some of the traditions,” she took his hand. “I know. If your parents were alive, it would have been different…”

Aw, a bit bittersweet but he will have a good wife to help him recover lost traditions. Lovely, Ritu!

Each country has a different tradition, now I’m curious, how do they do it in India?

Dependent on religion, to be honest!
Hindus bless the couple at the door, then the bride knocks a small pot of rice over with her foot, to signify bringing luck with her. Then I believe she steps in a large pan filled with red water, then steps into.the house. Her red footsteps walking in had the Goddess Laxmi, I think, coming in, brining wealth.
I am Sikh and with our ceremony, the grooms mother stands at the four and waves a special drink, made of milk and water, around the couples head. She goes to drink it, to signify she’s taking and troubles that may haunt them onto her own head. The groom is meant to stop her to say no, I’m man enough to handle it all. Then oil is dripped on the door frame, either side, and they walk in!
      I think! 😉

Those traditions are definitely more interesting… but I would not have minded if I was carried over the threshold anyway…🙄
