May 28: Flash Fiction Challenge – Sleepy Square-Dance

Charli Mill’s Carrot Ranch prompt this week:

May 28, 2020, prompt: In 99 words (no more, no less), write a story using two words that contradict. Examples include champagne and hard-rock; rosemary and sewage; duck down and firecrackers; sleep and square-dancing. Use one of these or make up your own. Go where the prompt leads!

I’m afraid my brain was unable to come up with something original, soI used one of Charli’s examples!

Sleepy Square-Dance

The upbeat music created a jaunty atmosphere in the air. All around Jack, there were revellers dressed up in what they considered to be true ‘Square Dancing’ attire, i.e. a check shirt, some with fringes, denim, and obligatory cowboy boots.

It was all rather surreal. He was sitting in a church hall in the UK, not America!

Trying to stifle a yawn, he caught eyes with Jill. Oh great, now she’s coming over.

“Come on, sleepy head, I know you’re tired, but a bit of a dance will wake you up!” She grabbed my arm, dragging me up.

Help!

Grab your partner, round and round! Oh, I can commiserate. We had to do square-dancing for phys ed in sixth grade. I recognize that cry for help! Fun flash and unexpected.

He he! I like to surprise 😉
I went to a great place which was a line dancing club, when I visited our twin university just outside Washington. That was in my mind!!!!

Square dancing is pretty fun. Haven’t done it but a handful of times, but when I did it was easy to enter (at a low level – it can get complex) and you didn’t have to worry about keeping your gender representation even.

SHOW ME THE MONEY!….. or I can truly give you the ins and outs of ” Square Dancing” Love ya Mr. Ritu, have a great day. By the way are schools are open over there crossing the little pond? Just curious, not here in Spain yet, so I have the neighourboors kids driving me a bit nuts with them playing soccer and yelling too much, can´t they be silent? Or mute?

I can only fathom this if the writer performs the actual dance to help visualise 🙂

A great take on the prompt, Ritu. I have to finish my editing by Monday and have 80 pages to go. I can breathe after that.
