#SoCS March 20, 2021 – Calligraphy

Linda’s #SoCS prompt, this week:

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “starts with cal.” Use a word starting with the letters “cal” as your prompt word. Have fun!

Calligraphy is going to be my word of choice, this week

I have always had a huge fascinataion with the ornate writing style, marvelling at the people who use those strokes to create such beautiful handwriting.

My own handwriting resembles a spider let loose over a piece of paper after stepping in an inkpad.

I’m not joking!

You’d think, as a teacher, I would have really neat handwriting. Well, I really don’t! I have to concentrate so hard to write my notes and feedback in children’s books, legibly, but when I aam just writing for me, there are times I forget what I actually wrote, and I can’t even read it back!

That can be a real pain when I can’t, for the life of me, read what I had written on a shopping list!

So, in lockdown, I decided to invest in a couple of courses, to learn the art of calligraphy. I got the pens, and everything.

I love the flow of the ink, but I am the one with a permnently ink stained finger, after clumsily filling the ink well!

After learning the basics, I found I was much more mindful of my writing, but the ink thing? What a faf!

Instead, I decided to learn how to brush letter, or hand letter, and I have had much more fun with that!

There are a couple of calligraphers on Instagram that are really amazing. Search the #calligraphy hashtag. We tried it a while ago and neither of us was much good at it. But it’s fun to watch…

Not really a fan of my own handwriting most of the time either. I’ve seen some of your work on Instagram and it is very pretty. Happy Saturday.

What a great lockdown class to take! My first grade teacher was constantly on my case about “poor penmanship.” She even told my mom in needed to improve. Today, I have good penmanship most of the time. I suppose I should thank my first grade teacher who I disliked very much, but she must be long gone.

It was a lovely way to get my head away from the anxieties of school life during lockdown, and came at a time when I couldn’t find my writing mojo, so I learned something creative, but in a different vein!

Well, John, if you are going to learn something that is meant to calm and relax you, you might as well adapt it to something that you will enjoy, know what I mean?😉

I learned calligraphy years ago, but I was never patient enough.

My regular handwriting is terrible too. At least, I can leave everything lying around, visible for everyone since only I can read it… lol

My handwriting used to be much better, but I think the many years of typewriters and computers made me careless. I’m not quite that spider, Ritu, but I do have to focus when my handwriting needs to be legible.

Our handwriting really suffers from typing on a keyboard and texting on our phones. Calligraphy is a beautiful hobby though 💜

I made an effort to lear calligraphy many years ago. It helped my handwriting for a bit, but I’m back to chicken scratch. I hope the effect lasts longer with you.

At school I was smacked with a ruler on my hand for having ink on my fingers. My writing was once compared to a spider having crawled into an ink well and dragging his feet on the page. I have also found calligraphy helpful and used to do a lot. Now I’ve got out of the practice but my printing has improved – not my cursive though!
