Spidey’s Serene Sunday – Part 321 – Clear Out

img_00411

“Clutter is not just the stuff on the floor, it’s anything that stands between you and the life you want to be living.”

Peter Walsh

Thanks for this, Spidey.

Timely, since I am, on my weekends, trying my hardest to do exactly that, clear out material things, as well as sort out my mental storage too, and all that clutters lifee, sometimes unnecessarily.

You think clearing out the attic is the toughest thing to do?

It is a bit of a slog, I grant you that. I actually had a massive clear out about three years ago, so I knew what was up there, more or less… and I am the only one who goes up there, yet, still, I am convinced there are attic gremlins… I swear there was less stuff the last time I went up there!

No, I jest. It’s not that bad. There is definitly a few piles of things that will be able to be donated or skipped, especially since it hasn’t been touched, since we moved into this house eleven years ago!

But what will be more fun is bringing it down, dust and all, because when we do finally move to that ‘forever home’, the removal guys don’t touch the attic. You need to empty it yourself.

Going back to my initial question, the attic, and all that stuff, is the least of my worries. It is most definitely Marie Kondo-ing my life that is tougher.

When you have a physical clear out, you keep everything that sparks joy, and if it no longer does, you thank it for its use, then say goodbye. But that’s not quite the same for everything that goes on in your day to day life.

There is an awful lot that won’t spark joy, but you still have to do it. Like cleaning, and ironing. Washing dishes, mowing the lawn. Going to work, paying bills… Adulting, basically.

In fact, it is often important to find what isn’t making you happy, and working out why it isn’t, and then finding ways to make these tasks more manageable, if not enjoyable.

Because, when you clear out your life, it is more about making the time to do the things that actually do bring you joy.

Finding that work/life balance, learning how to not just parent, but also be yourself, too.

We have a life to live, and even though there are plenty of responsibilities we cannot shirk, we also have our hopes and dreams.

So, have a think about what you are doing, every day. Where are you wasting time, doing things that could be done faster, enabling you to have a life worth living?

So, tell me, have you ever Marie Kondo’ed your house and life?

Have a peaceful Sunday Peeps.

Lets make a session of it, Sis! 😉 Great reflexion, with perfect metaphors. 😉 I am feeling back to my philosophic studies, were i honestly had no real experiences with the stuff tought. Lol But dont remember me on the traditional spring cleaning. Here the last days we got colder weather, so its a sign for me, not starting this before the temperature is equal or higher than 15 degrees (C), ;.-) Enjoy the rest of your evening, and i will read all you last postings i missed. :-)) Michael

Since so many of us share stories about our lives on our blogs, it’s clear that we have a lot going on, and it’s easy to get cluttered up…I have been trying to do a series of “spring cleanings” that have resulted in unused clothes going to charity, old magazines going to recycling, and few boxes of “stored” items never to be considered again…still so much to go!

I think I might have to read Mari Kondo and give it a go. Even after a number of clear outs, there’s still a lot of clutter in this house. I’d forgotten about the loft, since I used to be too big to get in there. I might have to bite the bullet the next time there’s someone in the house to hold the ladder.

A constant war, Ritu. Last time I did a huge clean out I vowed I would ‘watch’ the habits that led to it. Putting things down, rather than away seems to be the key!

Hi Ritu, this is very sensible advice. We do need to try and reduce the impact of the things we don’t like in life. They have to be done but we need to find time for the fun things in life too.

There is such an analogy between the physical stuff we are collecting and the one we store inside. I think when you are a person who collects physical things (because you never know if you would need it again, or because you are hanging on to it because of the past) you may also tend to do this in your inner world. When you begin to consciously clear out, you decide to start a long journey. In my book “I’m Free” there is a paragraph about it. I compare it to a backpack. There are so many boxes in there which we thought we might need on our journey. When we start clearing out, we begin with the one we added last and work ourselves down piece by piece. We need to look at each box, consider whether to keep it or let it go, and pick the next one. That’s why the oldest ones are found so late. So many layers to work through until we reach the roots oftentimes.
    Great and thought-provoking post, sis!

Oh, this hits the nail on the head, Sis.
I am totally a collector of stuff, and it is really hard to lose things. Equally, mentally and emotionally too, but I think it’s cleansing in a positive way, too. A chance to start afresh with many things!

Yes, totally! We realize the meaning and necessity of clearing out when the space gets too small or the bag to carry too heavy. Then we begin to look closer. It feels sooooooo liberating, and as you say like a fresh start!
To me, those liberating experiences actually led to me thinking earlier or often even immediately whether to keep something or not – also in physical, emotional. and mental ways. I think the often moving during the past 5 years helped in that process… lol

I don’t dare start, Ritu, for even though it desperately needs doing, there might be nothing left afterwards!

We once moved into a house to discover the previous owners of 25 years had not cleared the loft – we ended up having to hire a skip! When we left that house nine years later, Cyberspouse said don’t worry about the loft, there’s just a few boxes, we’ll get them down on the day! A few boxes – no they had definitely multiplied. That was the time the neighbours came round with suitcases to help us out on ‘the day’. Luckily we were only moving round the corner.
