They can talk sense, sometimes, these kids!
In the UK at the moment, the papers and news shows are repeatedly showing articles and items regarding Britain’s EU Referendum.
Just yesterday my colleagues and I were talking about it, saying that really we have no idea what is best. The with business acumen say we must stay for, the economy. But the speak in such high faulted terms that Jo Bloggs on the street won’t listen, so that point falls on deaf ears.
Many people, fed up with the immigration mess the country appears to be in, say get out of Europe, close the borders!
But it’s hard to get a rounded picture for the average person. There are many implications with staying in the EU, but also many issues that will rise with leaving.
Who knows how the country will vote?
This morning, Lil Man, who is a worldly wise 10 year old suddenly gave me his opinion.
LM: We should stay in Europe!
Me: Why?
LM: Because it’s better for us all.
Me: How will it be better? I’m not saying you’re wrong, I’m genuinely interested in what you think.
LM: Well, if we stay in, we have more allies, and much better defences against terrorism.
There you go. A 10 year old nowadays can’t even have a simple innocent childhood, as he is already thinking about things like terrorism.
But I think he has a valid point.
What do you think?

my four year old wants out.
But then he did want to vote for the purple party at the general elections, so its probably best not to trust him

Smart boy.. But maybe he should read the other benefits for if we were to break away from the EU.. I understand his point though.. At least he looks at current affairs though. But if you explain, like you and his dad do,I bet, then he’s likely to think more for himself and search for more knowledge if he’s unclear.. Most kids are too obsessed with TOWIE!

Technology makes it harder for us as parents to shield our kids so they can hold on to thier childhood a little longer.

I’m old enough to remembered the devaluation in 67, the loans from the IMF in 1977 and constant strikes – the sick man if Europe. Is it really a coincidence we are so wealthy now, 40 years of EU membership? Hmpf. Brexiters are delusional. There said it.

We in Switzerland have stayed out – and are an island surrounded by EU states (and it hasn’t done us any harm!); there’s no way we’ll enter… not only would it take away the sovereignty we still retain (and that every nation in Europe has earned, though many have given away now in the name of “unity”), but it would open the borders to the problems of the EU (immigration, etc.), and make us fob the bill for the lazier cousins who can’t get their economies under control. Besides, being in the EU doesn’t keep the terrorists out; on the contrary, it opens the door for them in the name of equality and diversity in a way that individual states in the EU no longer have a say over. Just a bit of food for thought. I hope the UK makes the right decision for themselves as a nation!

Sad commentary on where society is at, is what I think. My kids are aware of terrorism, hatred, bigotry, etc. It’s sad, but it’s the world we live in. And, that’s likely part of the terrorists goals, to have us living in fear. In some ways, it’s working.

I am more for leaving the EU. There are have been too many problems which could have been avoided if we were not a part of it. However, like your son (smart boy!), this thought did cross my mind. Perhaps this point, coupled with a few others, we should stay in, but get our powers back from Brussels, so we still have a say here. One of my biggest gripes is criminals (murderers in particular) not being deported because they have a right to family life here. The EU has way too much say, generally, I find, disagreeing with what we want to do.
It is certainly, one of the hardest decisions, we as a nation has to make.

I’ve actually been asked if I’ve taken the time to sit my son down to explain the current election mayhem. Not sure I should burden him with such things since I don’t know how to explain it myself. Rather have him mentally stay a kid for as long as possible. Although, he’s 6 and 10 does sound like an age where you start becoming aware of current events and fears. That was the age for me when the Gulf War happened and we went over it in class as it unfolded. Guess it makes sense in that context.

Nowadays kids seem to get exposed to so much, much earlier and it’s hard sometimes for parents to control what they know. I’ve decided that if they ask questions I’ll be honest… to a degree so the info is child friendly… but at 6?! No! Definitely let him enjoy childhood!!!!

I try to do the same. Play to the audience who is still learning that the kitchen cannot magically create whatever he wants at a moments notice. 🙂 He’s starting to ask about good guys and bad guys in terms of fiction, which seems normal. The tough part is when he sees the news and asks if that’s the bad guy. Always when it’s election stuff too.
