The Compassion of a Kid

You know my Lil Man, he’s a sensitive soul. He’s a total boy in all respects, active, a bit rough n tumble, but he has a heart, and a big one at that.

This evening, Lil Man did me proud.
We went shopping and at the supermarket they had those little machines where you put a £1 in and receive a bit of tat. “Mummy, I have a pound in my pocket, can I get something from there?”  I replied that it was his money, but not to get anything just for the sake of it. (Lil Princess, meanwhile, is trying to wheedle a £1 out of mummy as she doesn’t know where hers is!)
We went, looked, and it was as I had expected, a load of rubbish. So he happily put his £1 away and we went on.
We popped into KFC for a healthy Friday night dinner (!) And as Lil Princess was debating whether to have a Krushems shake or a sundae, Lil Man was looking at the charity collection pot on the counter. “This is for the really poor, isn’t it?” ( it was a world hunger charity of some sort) “Yup, son, it is” and continued with my order. He silently took his £1, along with another one he had in his pocket and dropped it in the pot.
“They need this much more than me.”

Awwww! My heart would burst with pride, if it could! I’m so happy! His heart is bigger than him! And he truly is just like his daddy!

(Lil Princess meanwhile realizes how happy mummy is with her brother, and tries to impress me with all these ideas she has, to help charity… “But I can’t find my £1”!!!)

While I believe that we are all born with the capacity for compassion, I also think that it has to be nurtured or it will fade away. So for your son to have done what he did tells me that you’ve taught him, by example or otherwise, that compassion is a positive thing. So for that, I not only congratulate you on your son’s compassion but on your parenting! You’re doing a great job!

Thank you so much! I’m sure we could do so much better but he showed us we’ve done something right! 😊

As my mom says, if you keep a little bit of doubt you will always keep trying. Parenting is a hard job and I can’t say I know from experience because we don’t have children, but these days there are so many influences that it could be frustrating for a parent. It’s always good to see children having a huge heart and compassion as yours 😉

Thank you again! All I know is that we were blessed as children, with my parents, they were wonderful, and if I am half the parent they were to us, I know I will be doing a great job!
it is tough, nowadays, you are right though, but we try to keep a little control, try to maintain their innocence a little longer, I mean they are only 9 and 6!
