Flash Fiction Foray #14 – Come On England!

Yup yup, it’s FFF time again!

This week The Book Blogger, Matt, has the cricket in mind and has given us Come On England by the Barmy Army.

Check it out here!

Well, here is my offering this week.. Loosely based on reality. My brother was a player for Warwickshire when he was younger, we’re Indian, cricket runs in our blood, apparently, but still I had/have no interest in the game…!  Unless it’s a gripping last few overs!

I buried my head into my book as deep as I could. It was a great storyline, and as I was gripped by curiosity, time and again, the roar from my family would drag me back to reality.

Yup, I was the sole non-cricket supporter, in a full on Barmy Army family. No match missed… And if England were playing, there was no hope.

I couldn’t even slip to my room… My father insisted we sit as a family to support our nation.

But secretly, the lure of those last few balls, even got me hooked!

Come On England!!!!!

Howzat!!!!

Hope you enjoyed it!

County level’s very good, so yes, I can imagine it’s part of the family culture. But the support is for England or is there ambivalence?

His lordship and Bran used to drag me to baseball games and I NEVER went without a book. But I never got interested either! 😀

Oh yes, my book… Always my faithful companion!!!!
I remember a particularly hot Sunday, and I had been made to watch one if my brother’s cricket matches… Yawn!
Right at the end, he was batting… Last over and they needed a few runs…. Last bowl. He was the last one to face the bowler, they needed a six to win.,,,
That moment, I admit, I had to put my book down, in time to see him hit the winning Six!!!!!!!
But other than that… Nope, no sport for me!!!!!

This was a great story Ritu. I am not interested in cricket either, but Mr Grump loves it!

I can sympathise with this, I’m not a great cricket person unless it’s tight or England are doing well, and I really enjoyed the realistic piece here-it connected with the bouncy allure of the song very well!
    Thanks for taking part.
    Best, Matt

At least you know what cricket is! I enjoyed the glimpse of autobiography in there. X

I’m with your dad; compulsory cricket watching. It might be the new National Service putting spine into the younger generation!! Great flash; my daughter is next to sympathising! And yes, your Indian heritage means you have to love cricket! And if you want a perfect gift for your dad try http://www.amazon.co.uk/You-Must-Like-Cricket-Memoirs/dp/0224075217 it is written by a Times of India journalist and is the best description of being a cricket fan I’ve ever read of whatever nation you follow.
