Damn! Morning Relapse!

I knew it was too good to be true..

Two nights in a row, with no late night Lil Princess shaped visitor, then came night three, and BAM! There she was again!

Just about managed to rouse her, with the bribe of her school trip today (she is very excited!) but did she eat like a speed train, and is she already changed and ready to go?

Not a chance!

Well, to be honest the last two mornings, though she slept in the correct place, she was still Lady Slow Coach when it came to eating and getting dressed, but the lure of Leeds Castle today was meant to make her

a) stay in her bed
b) make her leap out in the morning
c) encourage her to eat up, nice and quick
d) change like the speed of light

And generally be ready by 8…

So now we had no TV on, no talking, and STILL, she is there, excited, yes, but unable to do two things at once! Wants to talk about the most random things, (she is the Queen of Random!) yet can’t dress at the same time!! I really need to get her initiated into the female are of multitasking ASAP!!

It’s past 8, again, I have time to write a post because of her tardiness, and I have yet to do her hair!!!

Thank God for that morning cuppa, is all I can say!

Happy Thursday, and remember, Friday is only a few hours away!!!!!!!!

Soooo NOT a Morning Person!

Sat here waiting… Waiting for the Lil Princess to get ready for school…
I’m up before the crack of dawn, rushing around like a blue arsed fly, trying to do lunches, get uniforms and school bags ready, so when the kids descend, it’s a simple process, teeth, breakfast, wash face, change, hair done, coats on, out the door!
Seems like a faultless process… Hmm well it works fantastically for Lil Man, who wakes early anyway, he’s eaten, chances and ready with shoes n coat in half an hour before we need to leave, bless him!
But Her Highness, The Lil Princess… Well it starts with trying to rouse her… From my bed, I’m ashamed to say, but she manages to get in almost every night, while we are fast asleep, and most times I only know, when I wake, and there she is, snuggled up to us!
Well, this is where she is sooooo like her daddy, Hubby Dearest, as I wake her, she’s like “5 minutes, 3 minutes, 1 minute! I just need to streeeeeeetch…..!” After practically dragging her down the steps, and plonking her down its the rigmarole of deciding what to eat… 5 minutes and several whines (by this time, I need wine not whine!) later, it’s decided, then Oh My God, I’m showered, breakfast done, and she still has over half left! 10-15 minutes more of cajoling then maybe, just maybe she’s finished. Then comes the lurching to the bathroom to freshen up! By now she is up and sprightly, but then she CAN’T stop talking!
And, unlike most women, she hasn’t mastered the art of doing more than one thing at a time! As she changes, she pauses to have conversations with me, her brother, the cat, anyone who’s there! I have given strict instructions to everyone not to respond back, but it doesn’t stop her!
With 2.5 minutes to go before we leave, if we’re lucky, she presents herself to me, “A nice hairstyle please mummy!”
REALLY!?!?
A quick scraped back plait, ( her hair is below her bum, I have no time to do more!) and wrapped up, shoes in, finally we’re ready to go!
I’m lucky she still doesn’t really understand time yet! I get her up 20 minutes earlier than I have to, because of this, and still we end up rushing around like headless chickens! Well, I do, she just saunters on…
And on this note, I go to scrape back her hair. Before getting out the door!
See, she takes so long, I have time to write blog posts too!!!!
Happy Monday everyone!!

Test me, mummy!

So the Lil Princess asked me to test the 1 x tables, 2 x tables etc…
She was in her room, I was shouting from around the house, as you do.
I tried to trick her with a couple of 3 x tables, and was amazed… She was getting them all right!
Until I remembered… The kids have a Multiplication poster in their room! Cheeky monkey!!!

I just wanna be taller…

Somehow, tonight, the kids and I ended up discussing plastic surgery…

No, I don’t condone it on young people, but I will discuss various topics with the Little Monsters, in simplistic terms, if questions arise… as they did today!

The kids were talking about sight, and contact lenses, and Lil Man mentioned that I had already had Laser eye surgery. “Why can’t kids have it?”. While explaining why, I touched on nose jobs and things, talking about how your body needs to grow first, before being altered, or surgery could be pointless.  I also mentioned boob jobs as I know at the age of 9 he likes a good snigger at the words ‘boobies’ and ‘breasts’! (The meat aisle is a constant source of amusement to him at the moment, what with chicken breasts and turkey breasts!)

Lil Man asked ” Can you get an operation to make you taller too then?”

I hesitated before answering… He continued “because I think I’d like to have that, if it makes you taller.”

I hadn’t anticipated that question, but as soon as he asked it, I kinda knew that statement would follow. I’ve made no secret of that fact that my Lil Man is small in stature, for his age, but I didn’t realise it bugged him that much! We’ve had the conversations in the past, I’ve even researched famous vertically challenged people with him, so he doesn’t feel like being small is a bad thing, and at the end of the day, he’s 9, there is plenty of time for him to grow.  But obviously it does bug him.  “People at school don’t believe I can’t be good at anything in sports because I am so small. They think I’m rubbish…”

Now, far be it for me to big up my son, but this is so far from the truth, its unreal. In fact he has surprised his teachers and sports coaches with his strength, and skills in football (soccer), basketball and badminton.

Aside from telling him to ignore these people, I was at a loss… what should I tell my Lil Man?

Great things come in small packages. We’ve all heard that old chestnut countless times, I’m sure, but how do I make him believe it?

Happy Lohri everyone!

People be like “huh? What’s she going on about?!”
Well, I won’t get too technical, because, well, I don’t know all the ins and outs, but especially in Punjab, India, we celebrate a festival called Lohri, on the 13th January.
There are several reasons it was celebrated, the winter solstice, the end of winter (supposedly!), a harvest festival of sorts, a new year celebration, and also a welcome celebration for the newest members of the family, who joined during that year, via marriage or birth.
Ins and outs of the festival, well a big fire is lit, and people throw handfuls of sesame seeds in it, chanting a rhyme which roughly translates to welcome happiness and do away with negativity.
And where there are a bunch of Indians, there is sure to be food!! It’s traditional to eat Saag (spinach curry), Makki Di Roti (corn meal chappatis), and Kheer (rice pudding) made with gur, the unrefined sugar made there. Ok, so diet outta the window tonight!!

Many families used to just celebrate when a baby boy was born, not a girl, because apparently you weren’t to celebrate a girls birth, but a boy, oh yes! Rejoice! (Not good!) my family didn’t really celebrate this festival, in fact I really learned about it after getting married. When Lil Man was born, we had a gathering at home, the fire lit, a marquee in the garden music and merriment! A lot of happiness!

When Lil Princess was still but a bump in my tummy, I spoke with my father in law about celebrating a girls arrival… He was very strict on this point, ” no, only a boy, not for girls.” Not because he is sexist, per se, but because this was how it had always been done in the villages, when he was growing up.
Unbeknown to him though, in the villages and towns in Punjab, in recent years, a girl is celebrated much more than a boy. The reason? Because boys were given so much importance, especially in rich families, that they would do nothing all day, but live the life of Riley, get into bad ways, spend what their parents worked hard to earn, and generally cause more heartache… Or they would go abroad, and forget their families left at home. And the daughters? They took the mantle of ‘son’ and started getting jobs, looking after their parents, in their senior years, and took responsibility of families. Suddenly, a boy was not necessarily the best choice!
Hence, all children were being celebrated!

But still, it was not a viable choice here, apparently. No one in the UK was up to speed with the way things had changed in India, so we had our own little celebration at home, but not the big hoo ha Lil Man had.

And this year, I have a new little person to welcome in our lives, my nephew!
I don’t know whether they will celebrate in Finland, but my mum is there, so I hope she attempts to make Saag at least! I know my mother in law is preparing the feast as we speak!

And we have our lil Sonu Singh too! Ok, so cats aren’t meant to be included, but he IS our new baby!

So, Happy Lohri everyone who celebrates, and to all my blogsters too!!!
