I Tried To Be Grown up! #ThrowbackThursday

Ever had those days when you think “Right, I really can’t keep being a big kid, I need to grow up, just a little…”
No? Me neither! Well, not often, anyway.
The other day, I had one of those moments.
I reached for a sugary soft drink in the fridge, then stopped and thought “No, I’ll have a more grown up cold drink, like my mum has… So I grabbed a can of Tonic Water(no gin!). This is a drink she would always order if we went out… This, or Bitter Lemon
I cracked open the can… And my reaction?

image

My mouth puckered, my tastebuds hollered at me “WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO US????”. Really mum? You willingly drink this? Maybe I needed to add gin!
The horribly familiar bitter taste stayed in my mouth, as I looked closer at the can.

image

ERM… “Masterfully made with Quinine”.
Really? No wonder my tongue was having horror flash backs… Quinine, the malaria drug of choice that we had to swig weekly on our summer holiday visits to family in Kenya!
I remember us trying to hide every week at that same time, when the quinine bottle came out, and as children, we had to drink the syrup… At least the tablets were down your throat quick flash, but that syrup liked to linger…
Uuurgh!!!

But I Smile Anyway...

You’re brilliant! This post made me cackle. I’ve been questioning my grown up status in my household and my love of grape juice (everyone curls their faces at it and say it tastes like cough mixture!). Thanks for sharing a great post. 😁

Did you try adding some lemon or lime? I quite like tonic water once you add that…

    Still…it’s better with gin.

I have to smile Sis, I love tonic water and often drink it πŸ’œ the fact it has Quinine in is a bonus because I suffer from awful cramp! Also I take a Quinine tablet every night. Love that photo, your face is s picture. πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ

A good way for me to start the morning with a good laugh from your post. It made me think about mouthwash day at school when I was little. Someone would come in the classroom with cups of mouthwash for all the students. Lets say it wasnt a day we were cheering for. lol

Your expression reminds me of having to drink castor oil wherever we were sick growing up, then sucking on an orange to cover the yucky taste!!! 😝 Too funny Sister!!!

Yuck, I do not drink tonic. I do, however, drink too much plain soda water (pretty much just carbonated water that’s been canned). Our water is perfectly fine, so I’m not sure why I waste my money to buy water…

I’m happy by just drinking plain water. Not into any health stuff especially if it processed or it comes in packaged form.

My Mom drinks tonic water when we’re out, I once accidentally sipped it thinking it was my drink and, well, my reaction was very similar to yours!

I learned this one a few one a few years ago+! Only drink tonic water solo if you are in a country where malaria is prevalent or if you suffer from leg cramps πŸ˜€

I do feel sympathetic to you, I think I’d react the same. When I was a kid my mother would regularly treat us with this substance she called sulphur and treacle. We all screwed up our faces as well but mum assured us it would prevent us from having worms and that thought no matter how unlikely it ever was made us open our mouths, wide.

Ha Ha! Sometimes I drink tonic water as I get cramp really badly and quinine is supposed to help. It is not that nice though, I have to say.

I try, but there are people who make it their job to force me to ‘adult’. I’ve had tonic water before as a kid. I wanted soda at a family member’s house, but they didn’t drink it. I went into the fridge and found a can of tonic water. It had bubbles, so it MUST be soda. Did not end well.
