One-Liner Wednesday – Achievements

“Not everyone’s an academic, so why do we seem to judge, on that, rather than a whole person?”

Ritu Bhathal

For Linda’s #1LinerWeds Linda was worried about posting late, this week. Well, I’m right with her there, today!

Interestingly enough, Ritu, I had this exact same discussion with my mother today.

Martin Luther King Jr. had it right. “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

It can make me so mad when I notice that people are judged by the way they appear (subjectively) on the outside. Very mad.

My answer to that question is, because we are humans. As a matter of fact people that don´t have an acedemicc carreer, some people, but quiet a few are smart as hell, they might use it for not the better things in life but street smart trumps academic. In my view.

Throughout my son’s schooldays he was always appreciated and praised for such things as trying hard, having a good attitude, being cheerful, being kind, a commitment to learning – and that was in the context of a special school. In some ways I feel he was in a protected environment. The traditional mainstream school environment is very different. My daughter suffered from that, on a personal level (although I must admit she is doing wonderful things now as a filmmaker). The mainstream school environment really needs to change its obsession with exam results and academic achievement – but how can it do that if it is driven by politics and the values of whatever government is in control? (I realise you know much more about this than I do!!)

Agreed, but as an academic you can earn more money, if you go into politics. 😉 Even if later, as in Germany, it often turns out that the dissertation was stolen. :-)) xx Michael
