The Time He Was Right…

Okay… I have to admit it… I don’t always know everything…

A couple of weeks back, I had to head into London for the first of a two day training course for work. It was a pretty straightforward journey, though the walk from the station to the venue was fun, with my phone map taking me on a merry ride!

I do like having the day out to learn new things with other like-minded professionals, and was excited at the prospect of the second day out, which was yesterday.

Then I got an email to say the venue had changed.

It was still London, but East London, and that meant I had to find a different way of getting there.

All the route planner apps gave me long winded ways to arrive, insisting that I had to leave at the crack of dawn and take 6,000 different tube trains, to get there for 8.30am (yes, 6,000 is a bit of an exaggeration, but what’s a little retelling without a bit of embellishment?) ready for registration.

I sat and chatted with my Bro in Law (BIL) and Hubby Dearest about the best way to get there, as nothing was making sense to me.

Even my BIL was confusing me, with routes that would need 2-3 changes.

Hubby Dearest calmly said, “It’s fine, you just need the fast speed train then one tube…”

But was I listening?

No.

I sat studying a map for ages, my BIL getting more and more excited about how I could get there, and if I wanted to take a train at half past very early, I could join him, as that is when he usually goes.

But I was trying to avoid the overly early start…

I thought the train station would be the best place to go. They would give me the best route and train times in the kiosk.

Hubby tried to stop me going, but it was pointless, after all, I know best.

So Lil Princess and I went and spoke to the first ticket lady, who didn’t know where either Shadwell station, or Whitechapel were! She then pulled up the train app on her phone (which I had already looked at) and gave me a great route that included about 5 changes!

Lots of help.

Oh, and the advice I get a train to a specific station and take a 5 min walk to Bank tube station… when the actual station that is near where I would disembark was EmBANKment! That would have been fun if I’d listened to her!

I decided to try the actual ticket office, and the guy there was very helpful and friendly, but the same as the first woman I had spoken to. No clue as to how to properly advise me.

So, I turned back home, disappointed that I was in no better a position.

Hubby sat there, with his foot up (still being partially hoppalong at this moment) and said “So, have you found a good route?”

I admitted that I was nowhere nearer to knowing where I was going than when I left.

Then he calmly pulled out his phone and showed me a tube map. “Here. You get the fast speed train, like I said, then the pink line there, do you see, the Hammersmith & City line, and it takes you straight to Whitechapel. One change, and you’re done. And it’s fast speed so you don’t have to be up too early.”

He had been right all along… But I just wouldn’t listen, would I?

The journey was great, in the end. I caught a train at 7.21am and was at the venue dead on 8.30am! And home by 5pm.

Perfect.

I may just listen to him a little more, once in a while…

Can you admit when you are wrong?

Store Twenty One

This past few days we have visited several large shopping outlets, and I’ve come out with hardly anything… From the large shopping centre and outlet, Lakeside to Bluewater shopping centre. And yesterday we visited several shops here in Brum with my mum… Expensive ones, discount ones, outlet ones, usual ones… And I saw nothing, seriously nothing…
But I have to say, the last couple of years every 6 months or so, I like to go to this shop near my parents house… I haven’t seen an outlet of this company down our end, but seriously, its great!

I’ll always end up with a bag full of stuff, costing ÂŁ60-70 for a whole heap of stuff!
Check out my loot this time!

6 dresses and 3 lots of leggings!!!
I’m well impressed!

I hate to spend too much on work clothes, as working with little ones, try here is always an abundance of paint and glitter, and if you wear something expensive, its sure to get ruined!!!
But this place, perfect! And things wash and last too!!

But I Smile Anyway...

The 11+ – To Sit or Not To Sit?

It’s got to that time in his life already… We need to help Lil Man make some decisions now, so we can fill in the relevant application forms in a few months time.
He has one year left after this one in Junior school and will then embark on his journey at ‘BIG’ school! Aaarrrgghh! When did he get old enough to do that? I’d love to keep him here, under my watchful eye, wrapped up in cotton wool but that is just silly, I know. The thought of big school and my petite Lil Man is scary enough, without the added stress of where to apply!
There are still Grammar Schools here in our area which children sit the 11+ for. Usually the more academic children go there, are pushed more. These are the kids who everyone expects to do well, go to university etc.
In our Indian culture, academia, studying, passing with flying colours is a great thing. Everyone wants their children to do well, regardless of their capabilities. I have seen, during my work at school, children tutored to to the end of their minds, to pass the 11+, only to gain entry into the hallowed Grammar School, and spend the next 7 years struggling.
But it’s ok, at least the parents can say with pride that their child has gone to Grammar!
This is where I am wondering, am I thinking right or wrong for my son? He is a bright little thing, loves reading and writing, tries so hard in Maths, enjoys the topic work he does, and excels at sports.
The thing is, though his enthusiasm is great, in Maths his actual achievement is not above average, or even average, for that matter. Though he loves what he does, is a little sponge, collecting facts and remembering them, he is not Mr Academic.
I know what Grammar School entails, and unless a switch flicks somewhere in his brain sometime soon, I fear if I push him to sit this test, after tutoring, and he somehow gets in, he will be the one who is at rock bottom in school, for the next 7 years.
Actually I don’t believe in tutoring to pass tests like these. If they need that much extra help, surely that indicates that it is possibly beyond a child’s reach?
I have bought him the home help books for the 11+ test, and I am fully behind him if he WANTS to take it. I’ll help him at home if that’s what it takes, but I can’t and will not force him.
If he doesn’t get to Grammar School who cares? Isn’t it better to go to one of the local schools, and be one of the above average, or average pupils, rather than spend a large chunk of his academic life feeling like he’s the thicko of the class?
I’d love some feedback on what you think…
