Short for promenade. In days of old, there would be an area near the sea, or river in our case, where people would go for a walk, an amble, a promenade! Oth is is in Kent, near the River Thames.
Oh ok; thanks for writing in. I have read of Kent , which was perhaps the setting of Enid Blyton’s Five Find Outer series- one of my childhood favourites- have you read these ? There is often a reference to Maidenhead.
Thank you and glad to meet you again- because you are an Enid Blyton fan too !
Can you believe, when I went to the US recently to a bookshop which had so many books, old and new and the booksellers had never heard of Enid Blyton – I nearly died of shock.
That really is shocking! My first experience was when I was 4… I was in hospital, having my tonsils out, and as I’d been so brave, my mum bought me the whole original Noddy series, gollywogs n all! It was a life long love story! I have collected others along the way, and read them to my own children now! In fact the Famous Five, and Secret Seven, which I wasn’t fussed about then, I’m discovering with them now!
And I- at 45, I am on an Enid Blyton collecting spree- I try to buy and read over all books, those I have read as a child and some not read, so I have a handy collection for me to read- Bliss- no sisters or mother to fight with to get the books and read them first- needless to mention they are great fans as well.
As a child, I got books from libraries or from friends but these days, I own them as well. The advantages of growing up !

Where is this ? I have been wondering what the prom is – the only prom I have heard of is what school students have when they are about to graduate.

I love Enid Blyton!! I was more the Mallory Towers, and St Clare’s reader though! Maidenhead is Berkshire, not too far from us!

Now if you lived in Minnesota, you could just drive to the other side of the lake and wait for the ball.
