Guess what I watched this morning? And can you believe I only watched it for the first time today?!
Well, I’ve seen bits, and that scene, obviously, but never the whole movie!
So, sat indoors today as the ‘monsoon’ rains hit Kent, I decided I would peruse the movie selection on Sky On Demand, and there it was.
Hubby was busy working, kids keeping themselves busy, so I pressed download and sat down to watch this epic movie.
How do I feel after? Hmmmm…. Well it was a lovely romantic film about two lost souls finally finding one another, and holding on. But the thought running through it the whole way… Men and women can never be friends… Is that true?
I have plenty of friends who are male, and there is nothing sexual about the relationships. I have friends who are like brothers, and friends who are genuinely mates. Plus I am in a secure and happy marriage, so there would be no place for anything else. I can even acknowledge that they are attractive, if that is the case, but I have no need to act on it.
And many of these male friends give me the respect of a sister, or treat me like one of the boys… Not like an object to fantasise over… I think!
What do you think? Can men and women be just friends?

Ohh that’s a classic! Yes, I think males and females can be friends without sex. Sex makes things too complicated 😉

I think they can…to a point. When I was about 13 my best friend was male and a couple of years older than me. We went everywhere together. Every year though he sent me a Valentine card ‘Love from Mr X.’ I knew it was him and I would send him one back. Anyway to cut a long story short, he sent me one whilst I was in the Army which professed his love, which was really awkward.
I did end up going out with him about 15 years later, but it didn’t work out. He didn’t speak to me for years.
I do have other male friends, but I think that in many cases there is an underlying spark there that would be acted upon by one or the other if encouraged!

Yeah Judy, I suppose there is that… But its a shame to think no man or woman could be friends!

I think it’s complicated. I think there are limits about how close men and women can be without intimacy evolving. Maybe not for everyone, but definitely for me. I married a long-term male friend. Long, long ago, I fooled around with my closest male friends. Now we’re all married and the situations have changed accordingly. If either person is thinking about sex…No.

Yup, I do think it is an individual thing… Some people can, and some can’t, I guess!

Another one I really like, again with Meg Ryan, is You’ve Got Mail. Very cute. And I love Bridget Jones’ Diary. Give them a try if you haven’t seen them 🙂

I guess I would have to say: Harry and Sally grew up together in the film. What she thought was love, wasn’t. What he thought was love, wasn’t. It took them being friends first, AND growing up before they could really be friends, and then be lovers.
Harry’s premise that men and women couldn’t be friends was because he was on the make, and only thinking about sex. His premise was based on limited information.
I’m glad that I could grow up with Harry and Sally, and that I was friends with my husband, before we were lovers. My trusting him as my friend makes our relationship so much better. 😊
Just my little two cents.
I’m glad you found the movie fun.

Have to agree with Billy (Harry): I could never have been “just friends” with someone as neurotically adorable as Meg Ryan (well, OK, Sally). One of my favorite films!

So, if you are physically attracted to soneobe, you couldn’t be friends?! I can appreciate attractiveness in the opposite sex, but not act on it, and have a friendship… Because I’m happy in my life, I think!

I believe they can and some of my best friends have been female sis. But big BUT the world can still be such a small minded place with small minded people. That don’t understand opposite genders can just be friends☺

It depends on the people involved. Some men know how to treat women and are not self-absorbed brutes. Then you have the ones whose egos are so big they think every female is swooning after them and won’t take no for answer. Also, there are the guys who just never grow up. However, I think one mark of a mature man is one who can be happy with one woman and respect all the others. It only becomes dangerous when a marriage gets in trouble and the wife’s best friend is a man she isn’t married to.
