Sue’s #WritePhoto prompt:

A Veiled threat I can hear "Uncover your Head at your own risk No one should see your face Else, you'll wish you never lived" I lower my head, awaiting Whatever fate had in store for me Maybe this marriage would bring my freedom Or chain me in another prison An unfamiliar one, at that I risk a glance at the groom Nervously twitching knees Punishing him too? Two cellmates, trapped Or two folk Free for Life? Ritu 2020

That’s frightening! I had a roommate with Pakistani parents once, and she got put into an arranged marriage. I think it worked out ok for her,but I remember her being petrified what would happen if she did, or if she didn’t. This poem reminded me of that palpable fear.

It can be a really scary situation. Imagine not knowing who you were tied to, forever, or not even having a choice…?

A powerful poem, Ritu. The uncertainty of such a situation is almost unthinkable.

Thank you Sue. Not sure where it came from, but veiled instantly made me think of women getting married in the old days, having to hide faces until deemed right to show it.

Perhaps we all go veiled to some extent, until we can let someone into our hearts.
