#Notsohotpoint – an Update!

It’s still totally #notsohotpoint over here today!

I thought I would update you on the ongoing saga that is our Hotpoint fire hazard machines.

Thank you firstly to those of you that tweeted my post and used the hashtag #notsohotpoint, or retweeted. And thanks to those that shared via Facebook, or any other media.

If you recall, we were promised a call from the person dealing with our complaint today.

I rang Hubby Dearest at lunchtime, and there had been no call. No response via Twitter either, from their customer service Twitter handle @HotpointSupport.

By the end of the day though, I did get a tweet back from them, apologising, and requesting that I contact them via Direct Message, with address details and serial numbers etc… details they have got 10 fold over the last few weeks!

But, d’oh, they kinda have to follow me for me to be able to direct message them! Just a little thing! I cheked their account and they sent the same message out, more or less to all who contacted them via Twitter. I tweeted in reply, a couple of times… I am sure I shall hear back tomorrow…

Hubby Dearest, meanwhile still got no call back so he tried them again. He was spoken to by a decent individual who sympathised with us, and was only new to the job himself. He then did some running around and found that not only was no one doing anything, but the person who had been handling our case had, apparently, left the company on Friday last week!

He did give a direct email address though, and said he would take personal responsibility to follow things up… needless to say Hubby Dearest is fuming and we are worried that the appliances may be fuming, literally, soon too!

A little aside…

You know how all help line phone numbers are really irritating? They lead you round in circles with endless electronic menus that you have to navigate before being told you were in the wrong area anyway? Well Hotpoint is no different! So Hubby Dearest, (he is very resourceful!) spoke with the company that we had bought the machines from, and they gave him a proper number, where, amazingly, humans answer the phone! It hasn’t been any more fruitful than the automated one, but at least you get to speak to someone!

What is my next step??? Publicising that phone number so that all the other poor individuals can bug the heck out of them too!  What do you think?

Til tomorrow, when I will update again!

If you can, please tweet this post with the hashtag #notsohotpoint. Thank you kindly in advance!

Not so Hot-point

hotpoint logoNow, if you know me at all via this blog, you will also know I am a pretty calm, chilled, somewhat crazy person, but there are times when even the most cool of customers get heated… and I have to say right now is one of those times.

Have you heard about the safety issues regarding certain washers, dryers and other appliances by Hotpoint and Indesit from 2005-2014?

We hadn’t.

You can bet that there are a lot of appliances that were made in those years out there, and yet there hasn’t been as much publicity with regards to the faults.

Apparently, whatever this fault is, it means if you have an appliance that is affected, it could basically catch fire. Not such a big thing eh? Hell no!  It’s only a family’s home that could go up in flames, injuries or worse…

Well, guess what… it turns out we are one of the affected households.

And how very lovely of Hotpoint to make us aware of said issue, so it could be resolved!

What?

Oh, sorry, no, it wasn’t Hotpoint that let us know, it was an email from a company we bought the appliance from who thought it would be a good idea to let any of their customers who had bought Hotpoint from them know that there may be an issue.

So you are obviously bothered about things, eh Hotpoint!

Hubby Dearest rang them up, to see if we had been affected.  We were due to call them anyway, as it seems a yearly occurrence with the Tumble dryer. It decides to spew water out at us, rather than collect it nicely in the condenser, every December.

I think a little history would make sense now.  When we bought our house around 6 years ago, the kitchen was kitted out with Hotpoint Fridge Freezer, Washing Machine and Tumble Dryer. After about 2 years the dryer started leaking, and as I hadn’t gone for the extended warrantee it was cheaper to buy a new one. So we did.  It was replaced by a higher spec but similar model.

A year after having it installed, it started misbehaving like its predecessor, my kitchen floor left sopping after a load of clothes dried. As it was within warranty, I called an engineer out.  There was a part that had shrunk, and all the apparent causes of this shrinkage, like using tumble dryer sheets, or washing and drying clothes with petroleum based emollients on them, were not applicable to us.  After a couple of visits, and the part being ordered, it was all fixed.

Until exactly a year later, when the same thing happened.

This time I had the extended warranty, so I called up, and explained what had happened, and even told them not to send the engineer unless he had that specific part handy.  Around the same time, my dear washing machine was also doing things it shouldn’t have been.  An hour’s cycle was taking 3 hours.

I asked the dryer engineer, but he didn’t have a clue, yet, very helpfully, he called a washing machine colleague of his to get some info, and I was told my thermostat had gone, or the drum, or the bearings…. Anyway, it was going to be costly,  no matter what.  He suggested I get the discounted added warranty and wait a few weeks before getting an engineer to visit to check the machine.

This I did, and it took around 4 visits. Different engineers, different parts were tried, and finally they got from a 3 hour cycle to just over an hour.  Not perfect, but hey, I’m not fussy!

Thank you Hotpoint, I thought at that time.

Now fast forward to December 2015. Guess what happened ? The dryer started it’s annual spew mission, right on time! I had mentioned to Hubby Dearest that we may need another engineer visit, when he got this email from Appliances Online, where we bought the dryer from, stating their concern over an appliance fault.

A dryer like ours

After calling up the ‘customer service’ at Hotpoint, who were just an outsourced company, employed to deal with this unprecedented issue, we found out that yes, the dryer was one of the affected appliances. Oh and another gem from Hotpoint… it would take someone 5 weeks to get back to us, but don’t worry, use your fire hazard appliance with caution, it should be ok!

After a week, Hubby Dearest raised a complaint, and was called back by senior manager, who was all apologies. He checked our fridge and washing machine, and found that not only the dryer, but the washing machine was also a hazardous piece of equipment.

We were offered a straight replacement of the units, with something newer and unaffected, or if we had the receipts, a full refund.

Forgive me if I am wrong, but my faith in Hotpoint had somewhat become rather dim, and we decided to opt for the refund.

All receipts and information were emailed to them the week before Christmas and an automated response told us that it would take 7 days to respond.  Now we understand with Christmas, and New Year in the mix, there can be an additional delay, but it had been a couple of weeks, and since Monday, Hubby Dearest has been on the phone, trying to chase things up, and at least get an answer from someone, regarding what is happening.  It is hard enough to get a proper phone number, to get through to someone who actually works at Hotpoint, not outsourced companies, and then when you do, it is the ‘wrong’ department, and someone will call you back.

4 times, last week he called them.

4 times he was promised a call back from a team leader or manager.

4 times no one called back.

Today, a Saturday, he called again, and the team who answered the phone could basically do NOTHING! They were diabolical, and initially the team leader refused to come to the phone.  Very professional. Then, and I could hear the whole call, very condescendingly we were ‘promised’ a call back on Monday by the department who we needed, who were, shock horror(!)’ closed today!

It has taken countless calls, many emails, and a whole lot of hours to come to this, which is still at the same place we were 3 weeks before Christmas!

And, looking online, and on Twitter, there are many others who are affected.

HP Complaints

Doesn’t restore any faith!

So we are  still stuck with 2 hazardous appliances, which we can use with caution, apparently, and no further along the solving the issue route!

I am fuming!

More heated than Hotpoint anyway!

So here is my new hashtag for this issue

#notsohotpoint

I will tweet this post, and would appreciate some retweets… apparently we are more likely to get a response via Twitter, than from a phone call! Please use the hashtag above too, if you can!

I want to see these Hotpoint bigwigs get their fingers out, and actually clear this backlog of issues that occurred because of their own mistakes, and are now causing families to live in fear of exploding appliances!

Remember.. #notsohotpoint!

Peace out Peeps!

Real Neat Blog Award

Some mornings, you just need that little extra lift, and so, this morning, it was definitely one of those mornings! Having been woken extra early dye to a child having an ‘accident’, cue bed stripping etc, I was shattered but sat here to do my morning blog browse, and what should I find? The lovely Paul has nominated me for the Real Neat Blog Award! Thank you so much Paul, much appreciated!

The iPad Generation

Yes, I’m back on my educational soapbox!

You know I’m back to work when issues regarding school children start inspiring my posts!

Today, my gripe is grip.

Yup, I’m talking about pencil grip.

I am horrified at the stages my children in nursery are at for many things… And I believe it is due to the way we live today, but the pencil grip, or lack of is worrying. I know we all talk about computers, consoles, tv and tablets nowadays lessening children’s physical exercise. This, to a huge extent, is responsible for a lot of overweight amd lazy children who hate to go outside.

That was a huge reason why I sided with my colleagues on not getting more technology in the nursery. After all, these children in with us for a mere 3 hours a day, and when at home, most of them are pretty adept at using their parents phones and tablets etc. In fact the one PC we do have is also considered old. It’s not touchscreen and has a, shock horror, mouse! The amount of times I have seen kids trying to touch the monitor screen to do things and getting frustrated is countless. Mouse control is erratic in most of them, but they do try.

But this brings me back to my main gripe of the day. Pencil grip and control.  Fine motor skills. The vast majority of the children I am encountering, at the age of 3-4, have no idea really, how to hold a pencil, using the fist, or cylindrical grasp, as shown in the diagram at the bottom of the post. Some are at the Digital grasp level, and very few are using the tripod, conventional grip.

Why are some kids so behind in their development of pencil grip?

Because so many young children don’t ever use pens, pencils and paper at home.  When I was growing up, I loved to colour in and ‘write’.  I was given ample resources to fuel my hunger for mark making. (This may have actually fuelled my stationery fetish, but that’s another story!)

As my own children went through their developmental early years, drawing materials were key in my resources at home. My son, being labelled a typical boy, had really awful fine motor control. His mark making and writing was awful, until he was around 8, but I always provided opportunities to him, to practice, but in fun ways.  My daughter has always loved to ‘write’ and colour in.

One of the things I would do is always keep, in my kiddy change bag, a set of colouring pencils or pens, and paper, so if we were out, and the kids needed occupying, these are the things I would whip out to shush them.  It was amazing how many new ‘friends’ they would amass, due to simple pens and paper.

As I looked around, I recall seeing that other youngsters, in the same place all had phones or portable consoles to keep them quiet. Not toys, or anything simple.  This was one thing I was adamant I would not allow with my own children until they were much older.

Now, in my job, I am seeing the impact of this electronic babysitting. Children who have no idea how to hold pencils or pens, let alone use them with any modicum of control.  Surely it is cheaper, and easier, to buy a pack of pencils and a colouring book, than have a tablet? The skills a child learns through experimenting are essential to their fine motor control.

Instead some parents fear the ‘mess’, the chance a child may draw on furniture or walls, while in possession of a pen.  Or it is just far too much effort. In my limited experience, these are the children who end finding pens, and not really knowing what they are, do draw on walls, as they have no clue what to do!

Around 4-5 out of 40 3-4 year olds in our environment are able to attempt to write their name, some can write the initial letter, many are unable to copy, or trace. Some just scribble, with no form whatsoever.

Developmental milestones are not being reached in this electronic age.  Sure, they can play games, and virtually colour in via these colouring apps, but there is no concept of using your fingers in reality to hold a pencil, at all.

We try so hard to give the children opportunities to write, colour and mark make, but in the short time they are with us, many choose not to do this, so where are we supposed to help them catch up, and become adept at controlling writing implements?

Much as I love technology, and developments, I despair that certain important physical skills are literally dying out.

OK…  Mic turned off… thank you for listening!

I’m Back! (Kinda!)

Oh no!!

Hi my wonderful Peeps! I know I was only gone for a couple of days… Heck, I was still browsing my notifications. I couldn’t stay away for long! But not being so immersed in the Blogosphere meant that I was more involved in things with my family, so that was good.

However, I can’t totally give up on my Blogily! I missed you all far too much! I shall be reading posts via my reader as an when I can, so I apologise if I miss any of your posts, but I shall try my hardest to be a good follower, as well as a regular blogger too, and add the being wife, mum and teacher into the mix!

Today for me was the beginning of term, inset day, with no children but training, and preparation for the next term.  It was busy, lots of paperwork done, and now we are kinda ready for the next term…

So, I am ready for the craziness to begin… the kids start tomorrow… Dear God, help me!!!!!!!!!
