This really rang true when I read it.
There was a time when it really mattered to me, what everyone thought of me. I needed to be the good girl, the respectable girl, so I would do everything that was expected, within the family. ( and I still do..)
I would need to be thought of as fun so I acted like the clown at school. Heck with the hair and glasses I had then I was never going to be cool, so funny was good!
I felt the need to be liked and admired at university, so I was there, doing all the cool stuff, dressing up, accentuating the swan-ness that had occurred, after I blossomed I guess ( no more ugly duckling!)
Then I got married, and the pressures to fit certain ideals were still there, from being the good daughter in law, to a perfect wife and fantastic mother.
You know what, I fitted all those ideals but as I got older, I tweaked them… I realised I don’t have to try so hard, I’m pretty ok the way I am! At universily, after a few months, I couldn’t be bothered to doll up, just for lectures, like a lot of people I knew. Instead I saved that rigmarole for when I actually went out, and it was a lovely thing to get compliments from friends, who saw the difference, as opposed to some people I knew who had to look ‘just so’ at all times, so when we went anywhere, they looked no different, and they would be the miffed ones, when there was no compliment!
And as I have matured, I realise that the sacrifices that may have been made by our mothers before us, aren’t really sacrifices we have to make now. I put my family first, my own little family. Then everyone else comes after. Our partners, children, parents and siblings are the important ones. As long as they are ok, I really couldn’t give a monkey’s arse what anyone else thinks!
And, if you are religious, you should know, that whatever you do, however you act, Him up there, He sees everything. He knows whether you are good or bad, right or wrong, and when judgement day comes, it all comes out anyway!
So me, I’m happy being me. I know I’ve made mistakes in the past.. boy have I made mistakes! But I have always tried to rectify them, and I have never intentionally gone out to hurt anyone.
And as it says above, Like it or lump it, this is the Ritu you are gonna get! (Unless you find another blogger called Ritu out there!)

The Book Thief – Book and Film

Emma from Blue Chicken Ninja wrote a post yesterday about favourite last sentences from books you have read. I was pleasantly surprised to see the first sentence she had included was from the book I had just finished, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.
I was actually considering writing a little something on this book anyway, as I really enjoyed it, then this post of Emma’s came up, and enlightened me to the fact that there was a film of the book too!! If you already know this, sorry, but as I said yesterday, I only know the classics, and when I come across more modern movies, I get excited, thinking everyone else is like me, and isn’t up to date!!
Anyway…. Emma’s favourite last line…
Death. Yes, the book is written from the perspective of Death, sort of letting us know Death is not a bad thing, but merely the one who has to go around, collecting all the souls, when a death occurs. He focuses on the story of a young girl Liesel Memminger, and how Death seems to visit her, or those around her, a few times, and the books that seem to be the defining items at moments in her life.
Set in the late 1930’s and early 1940’s in Nazi Germany, it follows the story of a young girl, sent to live with foster parents. The couple who take her in aren’t enamoured of the Nazi beliefs, and are Jew sympathisers, who end up taking in a young Jewish man, to help him hide, and survive. I don’t want to say too much, it would make you reading the book a pointless activity!
There is the sweetness of a young love story within the book… Bittersweet, I should say… But I shan’t say any more, that gives things away!

The book was amazing. I would recommend all to read it. The film…beautifully shot, but missing so many key parts in the book, and characters. But hey, what’s a film maker to do? They only have 90 odd minutes to try and picturise a novel! So therefore, if you have seen the film, read the book… You will get so much more of the background, the whole story!

Guess where the munchkins and I spent our morning?
Can you believe that, given our collective love of books, it is was the first time they have been to the local library?! We got them memberships and while there, the were introduced to the Summer Reading Challenge which needs them to read at least 6 books over the break.
They were so excited that they eagerly chose their books, and said “Mummy, can we stay here and read some?” So we stayed for an hour or so, they read a couple of books each and got their first stamps too!!
It took me back to my childhood, and all the fun I had in our local library. Once we had our cards, I would walk there alone, and return my old books, and then browse for ages to find new books to borrow. I remember reading the whole Anne Of Green Gables series from that library! Slowly, as I grew older the library became less of a place to read fiction from, but as more of a study aid, and I spent must of my University study time in one. Gradually though, it became defunct for me, with me getting my own books to read, and the Internet for reference.
I forgot something! I loved the library and books at school so much that I was even the librarian in my fifth Year! Here’s a pic, but don’t laugh at the uniform and glasses!
Seeing these two enjoying this morning though, makes me yearn for those days again, and I hope many other children are introduced to the delights of their local library, for fun, not just for study!

I love this image! Marilyn Monroe, one of the sexiest women to grace this planet, an icon for many…she was no size zero! She had the lumps and bumps that us normal women have, she had curves in all the right places, and a few in other places too! But hey, who cared!
She was beautiful, and that air she had about her was what counted, not the figure. She was happy in her body, not hiding away, and that happiness showed as she would confidently show herself as nothing other than herself. No air-brushing for our Marilyn!
So be happy ladies, celebrate your lady lumps! I know my stretch marks and mummy tummy are the souvenirs left by pregnancy and motherhood, and I wear em with pride!!!
(I just don’t flaunt em.. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone!!)
