Hugh’s Photo Challenge: Week 9 – Stripes

It’s been a while, but Hugh has pulled out another prompt for his Weekly Photo Challenge – Stripes.

Read about it here.

My entry this time… it was something that came to mind as soon as I read the prompt.

My very own Karate kids
Those little high-kicking saucepan lids! *
I remember all the hype
About getting yet another stripe
They always did me very proud
And I would always cheer out loud
Another belt to show their skill
‘Hai-Ya’ing ‘til they had their fill!

*Saucepan Lids – Rhyming slang for Kids

It took me back to the days when my kids were studying MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) and the dreaded gradings would come, with them waiting anxiously to find out whether they had progressed to the next belt or not!

They did really well, until we had to stop, due to my job commitments meaning I could not take them to the classes anymore…

Lil Man got to Yellow belt, not even stripes anymore, and il Princess was on her Green Stripe belt. Maybe one day, we can get them back into it!

I’m surprised you’ve stayed on the tree thus far.

Of tree terror, he is the king

Slipped, yet safe up there you are.

Hugh’s Photo Challenge #6 – Unused

Hugh has prompted us with the word Unused as his photo challenge this week. Check it out here.

And here is my entry… complete with my usual poem!

tapesThey used to be

A necessity

Until replaced

By the CD

Once played until

They wore away

Now gathering dust

No one to play

Still I hang on

To my memories

From Pop and Rock

To Soul and Cheese

And now they’re joined

By my CDs

As digital downloads

Take the lead

I loved my tapes

Recorded with love

Now they lie unused

On the shelf above

Hugh’s Photo Challenge #4 – Isolated

I thunk and I thunk… It’s actually easier to write, using one word inspiration, for me, than to think of something to photograph…

The word… Isolated… Thanks Hugh!

But then I remembered a photo I took, a few months back, on a family walk out at the prom. There is a lovely park on the bank of the Thames here in Gravesend, and in the spring and summer, it is a pleasant place to stroll with the family.

Lil Man takes every opportunity to get out there and kick a ball about so that day was no different… Except there is always that danger of losing your ball when playing close to water…

And lose it he did! His brand new bright orange ball… Bobbing away across the Thames, possibly in the hands of a little Essex boy now…

Though Lil Princess was convinced it would float out, into the open seas, cross oceans, and land in India, where my in laws were at the time. And that they would bring it back, obviously!
So here is my take on Isolated…
