“If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change the way you think about it.” – Mary Engelbreit
Really liking the thought behind this quote.
You know, it’s true, we can’t always change circumstances or situations. In these times it is important to be malleable. Acceptable to change. Be able to compromise.
I remember a piece if advice I was given, when I was about to get married. A lady, much respected by my parents, wanted to meet me. She had come over from India. She said “The other name for marriage, especially in our Indian culture, is compromise. Nowadays too many young girls get married, and try to change everything in their in-laws house straight away. What you should do, is go there, and see. Give love, recieve love and with love, you can help people to change. If you bend first, slowly others will bend with you.”
Might sound a little backwards to some, but you know, it works!
When the wind blows, bend, or you may end up broken.
Bend peeps, bend!
Have a wonderful Sunday 😊

When I married my husband we wrote our own marriage vows and the bases for our marriage is….Trust, Communication and Compromise….we live it and breath it…if you don’t have any of one of these then you don’t have a good foundation for marriage…..that’s our opinion…good post….kat

The story you told is very insightful. New constellations are supposed to widen our horizon, to make us grow and learn and not to trying to adjust others to ourselves.

I am sure it is not always easy. And for sure it always takes all parties to make that work. A blessing when that happens, Sis! I guess you are very blessed that way!

That sounded like some typical Indian advise by an aunty next door but it is, nevertheless, true.

Wow. Very inspiring quote.. If we can’t change things, we have to change the way we view them. And yes, marriages, marriage of not just 2 people, it is a marriage of 2 families. So they should adjust and keep the love and kindness alive. Have a great peaceful Sunday Ritu. 🙂

Ritu, this is good advice for a marriage and I think we should try to adopt this but I don’t think this is good in the workplace. I did this in my previous work place and believe me, it takes a tremendous toll on your self-respect, your conscience, and your sleep, even your health.
At my age, I think its ok to give in for the superficial things but for things that affect your principles, ethics, mores, ethos- its better to stick to what you believe.
Forgive me for being contradictory.

Oh yes, there are definitely situations where you need to make the changes, but marriage was an example where it could be a positive, to bend first!!
