SoCS prompt by Linda this week…#
Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “cash.” Use it in your post as a noun or a verb… or a name! Enjoy!
Cash, money, wonga, dough…. and all the other names that currency has.
Do we have enough? Do we ever have enough?
Or do we have too much?
Do we put too much importance on the amount we have?
In this life, it is hard not to exist, in a First World way, without a decent supply of cash.
How many of you carry cash around? Or are you like the Queen, and other international dignitaries, who are above carrying money?
I am always amazed at people who whip out their card to pay for something that is £1.50 or something… I mean really? You don’t even have small change?!
How do you teach children about money, and all that simple financial knowledge, if you don’t have some coins about your person, or if you don’t pay by cash, in front of them?
ATMs, Cash Machines, these machines already make many children think that money is just there. You stick a card in, and press a few buttons, and Hey Presto! Cash in hand!
I find myself reiterating these simple things to my own kids, who still forget that mummy and daddy work hard every day to earn that money that is sitting in an account, behind those machines, and that each note is to be carefully spent. It doesn’t just appear because we requested £100…I wish!
Right now, we are actually saving some cash… redecorating rooms, without paying someone else to do them. I have never decorated before… painting and all, but we are doing this at the moment, stripping the kids shared room, and emptying the study, to create individual rooms for them… And it is amazing the cash we are saving, by doing it all ourselves!
But it is tiring, and sometimes I think.. is it worth it? Wouldn’t it be easier to just spend a little to make our headache someone else’s? The answer… I think is yes, it is worth it! Looking at our own work, and hopefully, two lovely bedrooms, will make us proud that we saved money, and that cash I saved, will be spent partially on a manicure and pedicure, to repair all the broken nails I have already managed to have!
There! Stream of Consciousness has now stopped running!

LOL. I don’t carry cash. One day my son asked me to buy him something. I didn’t have any cash so I said that I couldn’t buy it. It was something small out of a vending machine. As I was getting him together, my purse fell and my wallet fell open and all my credit cards fell out and my son yells “See, mommy you do have money.” I explained, “No, honey. Mommy has to pay that back with interest. That’s not really money.”

We use cards for everything, and pay it off at the end of the month. Helps budget-wise, because I see what we spend money on.

There is such a sense of achievement in doing something like decorating, even though it would be much easier to pay someone else. I think you deserve the mani/pedi!

It is a cool thing to do it all by yourself. We did all the rooms by ourselves and it is a different feeling of contentment after it is done. Have fun!

I have a great idea (as always) to teach your kids about money. Strip their rooms out of all the furniture, computers, cellphones, e.t.c. You tell them that if they want those things back they have to paint the walls, the ceiling might be too tough so just the walls, and they move the furniture to where you want it to be placed and then aftert they do that you give them back all the electronic devices saying that they have earned it at 5 pounds to buy a pack of cigarettes to give to a homeless person. That way they will start to see how philantrophy works.

I like to use cash when i can, and painting my inside walls gives me a feeling of satisfaction, in spite of the time it takes. It’s like mowing the lawn. You can step back and admire your work. I think it’s good for your kids to see how it’s done, too, like the cash. You’re a good role model.

I still use cash a lot (mainly because my boss is so old school that he still pays me in it, but that’s a grumble for another day), and though I think plastic is nicer overall it does make you think twice about spending it when you have to pass over the cold hard cash 😛

Oh dear, I am one of those who do not work with cash anymore. I spent too much if I do. I am much better at budgeting with just the card and believe me some ten or twenty years ago I would have hated myself. Great post 🙂

Go at a time where your branch is open. Then if it gets taken, they should be able to return your card!

I agree with you Sis about carrying a little cash with me,
As for the decorating, I am pretty rubbish at it, but Mr Grump and my sister can paint and wallpaper so it is pretty handy in saving some money, Think how proud you will be when you have finished and can say that you did that! 🙂
