#SoCS Feb. 6, 2021

Linda’s #SoCS prompt for this week:

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “flag.” Use it any way you’d like. Have fun!

I’m flagging.

We have a week left before half term is welcomed with open arms by teachers and parents alike.

Usually, the thought of having the kids at home can be a drag for some parents, but this time, it will be a welcome break, as, though the kids have been home since mid-December, they have been remote learning for the last five weeks, and parents have had to become supervisors of their children’s learning, or even the teacher, for the younger ones who can’t access remote learning independently.

They won’t be juggling devices, and ensuring that teens are logged in, instead of being asleep while their lessons are playing. No more phonics, and numbers, either. Just simple family time.

And for teachers, and school staff it will be similar. Instead of juggling the remote learning, marking and feedback as well as researching and recording lessons, and trying to teach the children who are still in school simultaneously, we can, hopefully, take our school hats off for a week, or a few days, at least, and recharge batteries.

Because, as I said, I am flagging. It has been a long half term. You’d think with not many kids in it was an easy ride… the mental strain of dealing with offering online learning, as well as ensuring it is being accessed by all, with coming to terms with new technology to deliver it… never ending.

I’ve been falling asleep before 10pm again the last few days. I’m already yawning, before midday…

Roll on, this week!

Well said, Ritu. My darkest and hardest teaching hours were remote learning last year. I felt like a magician pulling rabbits out of my hat. Parent felt the same way. And the children suffered. Thank goodness you and everyone will have a well deserved break.

I don’t imagine this is easy on anyone involved in teaching.

In my eyes you did the best ever. Recharging the batteries is needful, because after full reopening the states we all will be busy as never before. By the way remote learning must not be stressful for teachers. Here a teacher has found a new way. The pupils were at school, and she had tought them present only by a tablet on the teachers desk. Ritu, I love how you went a different direction with “flagging.” I had just read a piece on the Confederate flag using the same prompt. Your use is less common these days, so it is nice to see a term brought out of hiding and paraded around a little. When I think of your use, I think of those road races (race is generous for my slow running) where about two-thirds in I started to “flag.”

Take care and be safe. And, push through your flagging. Keith
