Monday Musings – Hey It’s Half Term! Teachers – At Ease!

It’s Monday.

8 am.

And yet I am at home, and not at school… why?

Because it is half term, the mid term break in this LOOOOONG Summer term!

“Woohoo!” You hear all teachers cry!

It has been a really tiring previous term, with assessments, and observations and the general kerfuffle that comes with being a teacher.

Finally!

A week off!

“But it’s not a week off, really, is it?”

(Small whispers from other teachers.)

No… it’s not, really.

Yes we get away from the school building, but after the week off there is still seven weeks left of the academic year! That is still seven weeks worth of planning and preparation that needs doing!

Usually I would go into school for a day or two to concentrate on work, but the building is shut to us this time as there is work happening, so I have my laptop with me.

I can’t speak for all the others, but I know what my week will consist of, on top of managing two kids, getting their half term homework done, and stopping them being ‘bored’ constantly!

Reports.

I know, there are still seven weeks to go, but when you have 40 reports to compile with your colleague for a bunch of 3-4 year-olds, and you have obscure comments you need to make, about how that child learns, and what exactly they ‘know’, you need to start early!

So at least two days, and possibly more, of my ‘holiday’ will be spent, sat with a notebook, compiling lists and trying to remember evidence for each child.

Then to word it!

The polite way to say “Your child is lovely, but knows Jack Sh*t!” or “Please stop mollycoddling your ‘baby’, it’s not helping them!” or “Thank God I’m not his/her teacher next year!”

But there are so many children who blossom in Nursery, and I could write reams about them! (Note to self; limited space on report form.. do NOT write reams!)

Then after that, I plan to rest up and enjoy a day or two with my family, and visit my Best friend and her new baby!

Because…

Next term will be a killer!!!

As it steadily gets hotter, the kids don’t want to concentrate, they want to be outside all the time.

For the most part, they are doing so well, that this last term is a time to consolidate their learning, and prepare them for when they go to ‘Big School’.

But, (and there’s always a But) we have to do our home visits for the intake who will be starting in September. This means a few weeks of reduced staff in the Nursery, while we traipse around the town, meeting new children, some of whom may not even turn up come September!

Though it’s gotta be done.

It’ll be a busy time, and we will be counting down the days to the summer holidays as soon as we start back, but you know what?

I do love it!

Have a great Monday Peeps!

The Meeting of Staff – 11 Points For Discussion At Teacher Staff Meetings

Staff Meetings…

The words alone are enough to strike terror into any teacher…

Why?

Because you never know what they’re gonna hold!

They are a necessary evil, of course.

A way to share news that will be affecting the school;

  1. Upcoming events – charity days, or activity days for the kids (Jeez! Do we really have to dress up?!)
  2. Policy updates – every subject has it’s policy alongside all the other aspects of school, like safety, ICT usage, Staff protocol… And there are regular updates!
  3. Staffing changes – Leavers – always one that draws shock amongst at least half of the staff as not everyone is privy to information that someone may be thinking of leaving, prior to the announcement, then there are the less shocking, like the ‘about to pop’ teacher, who we hope to see again the following year (and in between. bringing bubba in to school with them so we can have cuddles!!)
  4. Staffing changes – Movement – another one that can be a little bit of a shock. Staff can get moved around, but that is usually on a yearly basis, depending of others leaving the school. But there can be the movement created from a ‘shock’ leaver too… and again the person involved usually knows but often the rest of the staff is in the dark until said announcement!
  5. Training – that can strike terror into a teacher too… often you are sat for one and a half hours listening to someone that is reiterating a lot you already know. Mentally you are sat there, visualising a new display, or mentally counting how many books you could have marked in that time! But you do get the odd gems that you wish could have gone on for a little longer!
  6. Training Feedback – often individual colleagues go on training courses, and then they feedback what is worthwhile the rest of the staff knowing during the staff meetings. (Saves 30 faces getting bored for a whole day, and the school paying for the pleasure!)
  7. Tellings off – Yes that happens to teacher too! In a staff meeting it would usually be a collective one, not anything pinpointing at an individual, usually Heads aren’t that cruel! These are more likely to be complaints about how the Art or Science resource cupboard is kept, or a ‘pull your socks up’ with regards to certain marking strategies.
  8. Those‘ announcements – you know, about imminent inspections, and key visitors!
  9. Performance Discussions – regarding the classes, schools as a whole, upcoming national assessments, and reminding us we need to book in our observations for the assessment of our own performances! (No need to remind you how nervous I was about mine a few weeks back!)
  10. Any Other Business – Or AOB for short. This could be a mishmash of anything, from, parent complaints to a lovely letter  someone has sent in. Some of the above may be classed as AOB… so you have to sit tight to find out what the inside info is!
  11. And finally, Fun stuff! – Yes honestly, we do have fun sometimes! My head is great, and for one of our staff meetings, we actually went to the Panic Rooms to have a team building hour, solving riddles in teams in order to get out of the rooms we were locked in! Or we may be arranging an evening out, because all teachers need an outlet!!!!

We have ours tonight… aside from the training that is planned.. that ominous AOB is at the bottom of the agenda… (Any Other Business) That is the one that can hold the gems/nightmare announcements!)

Have a great day Peeps!

It’s The Little Things…

Sometimes a chore, a job you have dreaded doing, can result in a little gem appearing.

I have a special bag that I take into school. Not my handbag but my ‘Teacher Bag’. For those of you that don’t know, it is that Mary Poppins-esque bag which holds all manner of things from resources, to special story books, spare stationery to energy boosting snacks and all sorts of other things.

But the thing is I don’t just have one. Yes, I only take one in to school, but at home I had two others, jam packed with useless ful tat resources.

So finally, the other day, I decided that enough was enough. I had to go through them and streamline! The one I carried daily was giving me a back ache and I didn’t use 75% of the items in there daily. They were in there ‘just in case’ and for the last year, that ‘just in case’ moment hadn’t come. It was time to go minimal!

When I tipped the bag contents out, along with crumbs and bits of unreadable paper, there were balloons, water beads, and handouts – lots of handouts! Then the second and third bag revealed around 7 packets of tissues, screwdrivers, hand sanitizer, hair brush, and more handouts! (and resources obviously!) There was a file (or 4) filled with paperwork like class lists (4 years old, so a tad out of date!) and more resource and lesson ideas.

Oh I had fun. The bin was full, and I managed to go from thee bags to two. One is my everyday bag, and there is still more to come out of it, to be filed at school, and the second is my extra school ‘stuff’ that will come in handy one day, but I don’t need it every day!

But my best find?

A character reference about me which had been written by the children in a leaving class a few years ago! It brought a lump to my throat to read, to be honest.

I’ll show you, and hope you can see why!

Last Day Of Term!

Goooooooood Morning all!!!!

Yup yup the last day of term! Finally!

And you can bet there are a lot of teachers out there who are secretly breathing a sigh of relief too! Then may not me as silent once 3.30pm hits though!

What with assessments, report writing and progress grids squeezed into the last weeks of a fairly short term, it can totally exhaust a person. Alongside the actual teaching of course!

We had a great day yesterday in Mad nursery world! Easter egg hunts completed and chocolate nests made! And today we have a mobile farm visiting too!

Last night we had a school disco for the older children so my two, ahem, Angels, ahem, were all dressed up and ready, Lil Man being the too cool for Skool 10 year old that he is, Lil Princess being the over excited 8 year old on her way to her first big kids disco!

I was there on staff duty, perfect opportunities for embarrassing my children!! (Not that I could ever do that!)

There was face painting, and my daughter asks for “make up, like real makeup!” (Madam!)

Lil Man, who didn’t initially want to come, ended up in the middle of a dance off competition and won 5 out of 6 off his dance offs! Lol! (Not sure who the judges were but hey, if it made him happy, I’m happy!)

Now the thing is, I have 2 weeks with the little loves….. And seeing them argue just this morning, I think I’d rather be back at school!!!!

Am I A Child Beating Racist? 😨 – Accusations On A Teacher

images858H1KRJSeriously, this may be what some children are going home and painting my picture as! (Or parents!

The things we have to do…

I haven’t updated you much on my daily life, well, because I haven’t really had much time!

But it’s been a true challenge!

One session of children are darlings and are settling down, still a couple of criers initially, but they have settled pretty well.

The other… Oh My God!  What with possible Special Needs, and huge behavioural issues, it has been really tough.  There have been insolent children, no manners appear to have been taught. There are spoilt children who think nothing of shouting “No!” in your face when things don’t go their way. There are clingy children, who are so insecure, and these other ones really frighten them… and many more….

But back to my post title… Yes, I have since reported my faults to the Head teacher, and she said she will duly note it on my records!

So the other day I had to physically take a large toy away from a child as he was about to use it to hit another child across the face…(because he wasn’t getting his own way). well, I went off on my way, and later I saw said child on the climbing frame, looking forlorn. I asked him what the matter was, and he pointed my way, with a rather angry look across his face, you know, eyebrows down, brow furrowed, lips pursed. I looked behind me, he surely wasn’t pointing at me… there was no one else, so I went closer and he said “You hit me.” Really??!!! I was flabbergasted, but I couldn’t show it.  I asked him when. He just repeated it! Then I explained that I hadn’t hit him, I had taken something from him, as he was about to hurt another child…then he just flipped emotions, ran down the slide, hugged me and kissed me on the cheek!

I did bring it up with his dad, but he just laughed and said, “Oh, he’s always saying things like that, we know he does it for attention, or to detract from his own naughtiness!” Thank goodness! Well, that’s the child beating element sorted!

I have a huge mix of nationalities in my class as you know, and with the sweet things in my crazy session, I have had to have chats with several parents, just to get them on side, and explain that we need to work like a tag team, between home and nursery, to send the same message to the children, with regards to behaviour, and respect.  It will all take time but you know, it’s good to know the parents understand.

Well one has become very concerned about her precious little bundle… only child you know… and he is one that can be a little pickle (actually quite a big one!). But when I report back to her every end of session, when she asks, I have to say the truth, that he is ok for a while, then he starts the hitting, squealing, pushing and shoving, and defiance. So the other day she said to me that the other mums of her community said that I don’t; say anything to the other nationality parents, just theirs… I must have something against them!

HELLO!!!! I am also from a minority community lol!!!! But also a possible racist!

Then in the next breath, she said that actually they are quite uneducated (unlike her of course) and that she knew we were just trying the best for her son.  That said, the next day, he didn’t come.. I thought I had offended her!

But the ‘dear boy’ was back today… in full form.  Today he was lovely, until he started fighting with a child over a toy, and I removed them from strangle holds, restored peace, then he went to hit and kick again!  So the toy was confiscated. Boy, if looks could kill….!

He then proceeded to fill his mouth with spit, and tried to launch a missile at me… but it all failed, and nothing came out, thank God! Then he tried to flip the bird at me! except he very defiantly stuck his index finger up at me, not the middle one! It took a lot to stop me from laughing at this point!

Then the best bit… When it was home time, I called his name, and he wouldn’t come.  I didn’t chat to his mum today, as I frankly didn’t have the energy!  But he ran to the other end of the classroom, and I had to catch him!  Mum took him, hugged him, whispered endearments to him, and said to me, ” He was scared… he thought you were going to do something to him!” Wow! This child beating rep of mine is spreading!

Phew! Yes, still a colourful time I am having! One of the teachers I work with further up in the school walked past our playground and mouthed to me “Are you ok? Is everything going ok??” I said “Well I’m still here!” And she commented “And you’re still smiling!!”

See! That is me!!!

But, on a serious note, it is quite scary to think what one child might go home and say to his or her parents, could have a profoundly negative effect on a teacher’s career, especially if the parents are likely to believe a child, before finding out everything!. I know that there are unfortunately times where a child is telling the truth, and there is a real issue with a member of the teaching profession, but there are also countless times where an innocent teacher becomes a target, and loses their professional credibility due to a child’s fickle words. Here is where I thank goodness I am with my union! Hopefully my newly acquired negative reputation will be nipped in the bud… but just in case, I am covered!

And in other news… Lil Man was chosen as his class councillor by a landslide of votes! he is so proud of himself! and I forgot my car needed a service and MOT! Eek!

So an emergency appointment was set up by Hubby Dearest, and the lovely Bebe, my car, passed, thankfully!

And I am off to London for a course tomorrow with my Tag Team teacher colleague. A day away from the crazy class! YAY!!!! But I feel for the supply teacher and our support staff! Oh I wish them well, I really do!

Right… night night my dearest Peeps! Thanks for sticking by me on my new teacher journey!!!!! I need to crash!
