“You don’t know anything now mum: nowadays in the streets, its ‘shank or be shanked’.”
Lil Man
A worrying phrase coming from a thirteen year old ‘innocent’…
We were discussing an old mate of his who has become a nasty piece of work, and Lil Man mentioned that he was moving to his school… Me – not a happy bunny.
I was trying to get him to understand how he needs to choose his friends wisely or there are characters who will lead him astray.
The conversation was very teen angsty on his behalf, and there was no middle ground or attempting to understand that he just needs to learn to walk away…
No.
I got the above ‘quote’ flung at me.
Shank, for those you who may not know, is to be stabbed with a makeshift knife.
Scaring the living daylights out of me…

The fact that he told you this is proof enough he thinks otherwise. If he really felt that way, he would have kept it to himself. As long as he keeps talking, that’s a great sign.

That is for sure one of the biggest concerns of parents. That the children are in a healthy circle of friends. I understand your worries so very much. It is not easy how to react. But you know your son best. I hope he sees the threat and danger soon and understands. The problem is that they don’t realize what they are actually saying!

There are a lot of kids in his school from inner city backgrounds… And those who watch inappropriate things. They think they’re hard, saying things like this. I just hope we’ve given him enough sense …

I was just talking to him now. It’s stuff he hears others say… And when he’s angry about something, as hormonal teens often are, he spouts these street phrases … I know deep down it’s not what he thinks, but the way he looks when he says them, I can’t help but worry!

Oh! Is this the “School of Life “? A litle bit scary, but otherwise your city is not in an rural environment. So sad, but we have to deal with. ;-( You are a very good mum and teacher. Think you made and make it best. Best wishes, Michael

Oh boy, this is rough for both you and your son, Ritu. Without knowing you personally, I would guess that you raised your son well and gave him a grounded moral compass. I’ll think positive thoughts that he uses his compass to steer clear of this old friend or at least not cave in to any misdeeds. Hugs.

How worrying Ritu…Know how you feel as I have three sons. They all tried Marujana (?)when younger (and told me so) but were, fortunately, against hard drugs. Still very worrying at the time. Now 50,56 and 58, I’m relieved they’ve grown up safe and sound, and hope they stay that way, They may be mature but this mother’s love never changes… Hugs xx

It didn’t feel right to ‘like’ this post. What a worrying time to be a parent. You have the right approach by talking about difficult issues. Teenage years are always difficult but these days there is so much more to worry about. With love, Yvonne x

Maybe more than ever because it is not as before… But there is an important point in here dear Ritu, you are a nice mother and I am sure Lil Man will be growing up with your angle light… Blessing and Happiness to you all. WOW! That’s terrifying. My two youngest (17/16) come out with all kinds of phrases that mean nothing to me. They also tell me the scary tales of what the kids are up to these days – fortunately my lot avoid at all costs. You’re a fabulous mum, Ritu, and little man will make the right choices when the time comes xx
