Tween-age Angst!

It feels like only a short few months ago, I was using you, my Peeps as a sounding board, for my frustrations with Lil Princess, with her terrible behaviour, awful sleep patterns, and eating issues.

I would hate myself for thinking it, but I felt like, for the first time in my life as a mother, I had a favourite. I would much rather spend time with Lil Man, and leave Lil Princess to stew. I was a BAD MUM!

But over the last few weeks, there has been a true shift in dynamics.

Lil Man is 11, and has definitely hit that Tween-age time.

He has started to push his boundaries BIG TIME!

I knew it was going to happen.  He is due to start Secondary School in less than 2 weeks! Eeeek!

It started with him requesting a mobile phone. He actually does have a handset, an old one of ours, without a SIM card, to use as a mini-tablet on WiFi. But he wanted a SIM as some of his friends had phones, and they were using WhatsApp, to keep in touch with each other.

We will get him a SIM for the phone.  Actually, I already have one, but not giving it to him just yet. I know I would feel happier if he had a phone, so I know he got to school ok, of that he got home safely. And if need be, he could call or message to say whether any after school activities had been cancelled. But he needs to earn it.

But over the holidays, he has become so cocky, so full of attitude, and downright mean to his sister, I wonder what happened to that darling boy of mine? Someone has transplanted his personality into Lil Princess, and hers into him!

Ok, so he is still eating perfectly well, and she is still terrible, and he sleeps fine, whereas she can still visit us at around 3am, but it’s the behaviour!

Lil Princess can still be annoying, and downright naughty ( caught her calling her brother a ‘f***ing brother!’ the other day! Where did she learn that!?!) but she has calmed down so much, and seems to have transferred that angst to her Tween-age brother!

I find myself constantly telling him that various things will be taken away from him, or that he can’t go here or there, as he winds me up so much!

The lip on him! I can’t believe that he mutters under his breath at me! And he’s not good at hiding it too, so I know exactly what he said… he’s getting frustrated too, so his limited vocabulary of swear words is getting a good airing!

And to be honest, it hurts even more since we have broken our backs the last 2 weeks to give them their own spaces, their own bedrooms.  It feels like we are not appreciated at all, and everything that we do is taken for granted.

I know it is all part of growing up.

At various ages and stages, there are new boundaries that children will try to push. But Jeez, is it frustrating!!!!! And to think… we’ll have to go through it all again soon with Lil Princess!

Anyway, thanks for listening Peeps! I know we just have to deal with it, and I am prepared for many more battles… but still, GRRRRRRRR!!!!!

Decorating – Phase 2/3

I think we cracked it!

The paint has gone on, and even if I do say so myself, it is looking pretty good!

But there have been a few little slips…

It was becoming a bit of a comic farce… cream on white, so to cover, white on cream, but got white on cream, so targeted that white with cream, and managed to get cream on white again… it was like a never ending story!

My excuse… I am an artist, I am allowed to paint beyond the lines. I’m used to thinking outside the box, not being tied to these constraints! The lines are where I make them! (Yes, I know that excuse doesn’t really cut it when decorating, but then I never claimed to be a good decorator!)

But finally, we managed! Ok so there are wobbly lines instead of straight edges, and a few drops of paint on carpet, where the masking tape and sheets slipped, but who cares! WE DID IT!

Though the room adventure is by no means over! We had to separate the bunk beds to create two singles, which we did, but boy do my shoulders ache from that! The kids are still in one room yet though… there are at least 3 other huge chapters to get through before we can get them into their own rooms.

First thing is we have to order new furniture. The small cupboard, visible in the above photos, is falling apart, and is not splittable between two rooms! So we need to order two wardrobes, and two desks too. We have started the hunt, but everytime we think we’ve cracked it, another problem arises! I have created a to-scale plan and cut out accurate bits of paper to represent furniture, to see where things can go, without blocking exits, or to make sure cupboard doors will open, you know the score!

Then I have to clear the smaller room… I started this job today. Going throught the boxes of books and miscellaneous items in the study, deciding which to keep, and which to get rid of. Whilst doing this I ended up rearranging the dining room, to accomodate one set of shelves, so we can have some books down there! Bear in mind these are nothing to do with the pile of Children’s books that I have to separate between the children’s shelves!

Hands up… I an a children’s book addict…(There is one more box that isn’t even in the photo too!)

So the study boxes have been sorted, kind of. I need to look at the Children’s books tomorrow, and then use the plastic boxes to sort my stationery, and arts and crafts items into… I will need to take a photo of those when it’s all done.. but there is lots… again! These boxes will then be labelled and go in the attic, within easy reach, so when I need something, I can grab it easily!

Then the third big job, another which I love to hate, is putting together flat pack furniture… Whenever we order it, and it arrives!

Until the wardrobes arrive, I can’t put the bed in the small room, we will need room to manouver the wardrobe pieces initially, before attempting to put the bed in. Oh, and don’t mention moving the bed. I don’t know how we will get it out of the door and into the next door room!  We’ll deal with that when the time comes!

Curtains. Need to get the curtain poles up, and new bedding too! Never ending…

Oh, and I managed to do another little bit of DIY too! I changed a toilet seat! Ok, I know it’s no biggie, but did you know that plastic nuts can fuse into metal bolts, rendering them immoveable? Well, I didn’t! This has never happened before, but when I went to change the upstairs toilet seat, the nuts wouldn’t budge! I tried everything, oil, WD40, pure brute force. This seat was stuck!

In the end I resorted to YouTube to see if I could find some solution!

The first was to heat a pallet knife red hot, then burn the plastic. I didn’t fancy mingling burnt plastic fumes with the paint fumes already floating around the house!

The other option was to use a hacksaw blade to cut through the bolt. I requested a blade from Hubby Dearest, when he went to the DIY store to buy all the paints. He thougth I was talking out of my backside, so got some special Silicone WD40 instead. Guess what? It didn’t work!

I had to go and buy some top up paint so I took the opportunity to pick up the blades myself, and when I was feeling like a spare part, as I was making such a mess of the paint that I left it to the ‘expert’, my sister in law, I decided to try the hacksaw trick, and it did work! So, my toilet seat is now new, unsplintered and has great bathroom rules for all to follow on it too!

Excuse the mess, photo taken before I cleaned up!

Another thing I did was start going through the kids clothes… again! When wil they stop growing out of things?!

And they say teachers get long holidays to do nothing…! By the time this is finished, I will need a real break!

Another update will follow… When I get more done, and when I get some energy!

Til tomorrow Peeps!

Playing With Food #fruitart – Lil Man’s Creations!

I guess my healthy eating may have rubbed off on at least one member of my family!

For the last few days, straight after lunch, Lil Man has been getting creative with fruit!

Remember when you were younger? When your parents would always tell you off for playing with your food? Well, this is one time, I think I don’t need to say anything.

Check out his creations! And he eats them all up after, along with extra as he is creating!

In fact, if this way of playing encourages kids to eat fruit, I say PLAY MORE!

I Instagrammed (maybe I am getting addicted to this Instagram…) with the hashtags #fruitart #healthykids and we even got the attention of Delmonte! Lil Man was rather chuffed!

He’s Fruit-mous!

Any other Fruity ideas Peeps?

Summer Plans!

I was looking back on a post from last year, and it seems I am somewhat in the same psotion.

Last year, we had every intention of sorting the kids bedrooms out, and I wanted to try and get fit, lose a little weight… but it didn’t happen.

I ended up lethargic, and unable to do anything. The fear or many things was whirling in my brain, and on the last day of the holidays I got the courage up to to to the doctors.

I was diagnosed with an extremely low Vitamin D level, so put on really high dosage supplements! It seems to be the trend nowadays, everyone has a Vit D issue!

But I was good, and things started out ok… until I forgot to take them, and the tiredness crept back in. It took me a while for my sunshine deprived brain to realise that I had been forgetting something important every morning! But I did remember, and I am back on them. I hope this holiday, we can accomplish what we wanted to last summer!

I’m prepared!

And I kick-started my trying to get healthy past by going for a walk in the Gurdwara playing field, which is a stone’s throw away from the  house, yesterday evening, with the kids. It was so peaceful!

Serenity in the sports field!

And this morning, I managed a lie in, which was wonderful, with no night time visitors, except for the furry kind, and his was the face I woke up to this morning too!

I am currently packing for a few days at my parents, with the kids, and then the big makeover of the rooms will start! And I feel pumped! We will achieve this this year!

The Holidays Are Here!

I have spent my first vacation day in a truly lazy manner! Dozing on the couch, and eating takeaway!

But I had a wonderful last day of term! There was so much love, so many hugs from my little babies!

There were tears too, from Lil Man, and his classmates, as they were saying goodbye after being together for the last 7 years. So he enters a new phase in his life, and sheds that Primary School Boy tag, to now don the Secondary School Boy one!

I was inundated with gifts and cards again from my students, which was totally unnecessary, but so appreciated. Every year it humbles me how much these parents and kids think of us!

wp-1469224624278.jpg

Handmade gifts, and cake! Pens, lots of pens, and chocolates! Flowers, and my first award! Check it out!

How sweet!

Then we were given a card which was written so sweetly, I just had to share…

wp-1469224624276.jpg

This was to our whole team!

I’m not a meany. I wanted to do something that would show my appreciation but not just by giving a bunch of sweets, so I did what I enjoy a lot, and wrote a poem! This I then made into bookmarks, and explained to my munchkins that as they grow, they will read, and they should use this bookmark… so they don’t forget where their learning, and hopefully, love of books was cultivated!

From School to Nursery

When you started
You were so small
Now in a year
You’ve grown so tall
Without your mums
You’ve learnt to stay
With all your friends
You’ve learnt to play
Being your teacher
Has been such fun
We can’t believe
Our time is done
And come September
You’ll start big school
We hope you’ll find
That learning’s cool!

Ritu 2016

Hope you all enjoy your weekends and holidays if you are on them too!
