Tuesday Poems for #Writers #Inspiration – Blurb

Another poem inspired by Lucy of Blonde Write More! Have you ever written a blurb?

 Blurbing It
Tell me, what on earth’s a blurb?
A time your words, you have to curb
Take your thousands of words
Condense them to fifty – Yup, you heard
Make your story sound superb

Years and years crafting your story
Many words celebrated with glory
Now strip it all back
Hack, hack, hack, hack
Cos a blurb is obligatory

Well, you need to find a hook
Make people want to take a look
Those few words, back there
Should make people care
And want to buy your book

Finish The Story 2 – Murder Most Ordinary – Flash Fiction – @Tanmay_and_Jain

Thanks so much to Tanmay Jain for not only setting up this challenge, but for giving us the next prompt in the series.

There was something extraordinarily ordinary about murder that people just didn’t get!

Murder Most Ordinary

“I could murder a cuppa, luv. Go stick the kettle on.”
John heaved his weary frame in through the front door, catching a glimpse of Nora’s figure heading towards the kitchen.
Hands washed, freshened up, he sat on the sofa and clicked on the remote, to get his favourite programme on – Garden World.
*
Nora placed a cup on the table beside him, glancing at her husband’s tired face. “Why you can’t just switch off, I really don’t know. Look at you. Exhausted, I’ll bet your back is aching again too, and you still put the telly straight on to the gardening programmes.”
She worried about John all the time. He wasn’t getting any younger, and this new gardening job seemed to really be taking it out of him. More than most, actually. She’d often find him in a world of his own, and her voice would jolt him into action again.
*
He knew she was worrying about him. Natural, he guessed. But how could he even begin to explain the complexities of the new job?
His new employers were important people – though rather unsavoury.
And the reason his back ached so much was because of the rather suspicious bags he was asked to bury, and cover with mature shrubs… If he wasn’t mistaken, they might have even been body bags.
Still his job was not to wonder why… just to dig, cover and plant.
And anyway, all the money was paying for his retirement cruise.

Tuesday Poems for #Writers #Inspiration – Book Promotion

Another poem inspired by Lucy of Blonde Write More! Promoting your book without a publisher’s help…

Promotion Overdrive

 Won’t you read my book
Oh God, please, just take a look
It’s taken me all this time to write
I’d appreciate it if you might.
And I don’t mean just a chapter or two
The whole book please – then leave a review
Can I guest post on your site
A blog tour date, if I might?
Come, like my page on Facebook
I’m an author now, just take a look
 I’ve author-ised my Twitter name
Thousands of followers would be insane
 Building up my Instagram feed
Because seeing my cover is what you need
 Readers like a giveaway
A little give here will eventually pay
 Writing books is hard enough
But promoting them is just as tough

Tuesday Poems For #Writers #Inspiration #WritingCommunity – Covers #Etheree

Another poem inspired by Lucy of Blonde Write More! Designing covers is a tough one.

Covering Covers

Book
Covers
Are daunting
Who should design?
Professionally
Or try your hand at it?
Stock photos or take your own?
Images or illustrations?
Which font to use? Is a tag line key?
Author name - big or small? Top or bottom?
Oh my goodness, that's just the front cover
The back has got as much to debate!
What really needs to be on there?
Just the blurb or something more?
Does it need my photo?
Keep it plain or not?
Will it engage?
What to do?
Oh, God!
Blurb!

Tuesday Poems For #Writers #Inspiration #WritingCommunity – Querying – A Scary Thing

Another poem inspired by Lucy of Blonde Write More! Thinking about the choices we make regarding publishing!

Querying
A scary thing
Putting your words
In front of them

The critical eyes
The knowing minds
The hope they like
What they read and find

The letter than
Just needs a hook
To get them excited
About your book

The endless wait
Will they even like?
Ignore you or say
Just take a hike?

Will you get the note
That says 'Sorry, no,
Not right for us
But mind how you go."

Or the one
That encourages
But still says no
Gets you in a tizz

It could be one
That says "I'm in!
Send me your novel
Let the journey begin!"

Querying
A scary thing
Putting your words
In front of them
