Fabulous Friday!

224fb98f382e3b03692fe0db9a9b6416I know I have posted this image before… but it feels even more true and real now!

The responsibilities of teaching are huge, and it’s just the first week!

It would honestly be wonderful to kick back Friday Evening with a glass of wine, and not wake up early on Saturday… but guess what… that ain’t happening!!

In fact, to add to the fun life of the Bhathal family on a weekend, we have Lil Man’s footy training Saturday morning, and this week Lil Princess is attempting Punjabi school too! This is 3 hours of the day, learning about our religion, and also learning how to read and write in Punjabi! She really wants to go, so it’s only fair she gets to try it at least! If she manages to learn to read and write it, she’ll have one up on me!

Then Sunday Lil Man has a footy match, and Lil Princess and I should be attending a birthday party for a little family member!

Added to that, homework, and making sure I am ready for tomorrow too, and that’s my weekend done!!!!!

So, onto the rest of Friday, the last day of the first week back at school!

It’s been hectic, there has been stress, but it’s been productive, and I am so happy, I love my new job, and new class… even though there may be a few tough nuts to crack, I’m sure we’ll do it, with firm love!

Have a blessed Friday Peeps!!!!

Yahoo Woo Hoo!… Boo Hoo!

yahooWell, I tried to log into my Yahoo today, despite absolutely NO contact from them, and it worked!

No prompt to change my password, or anything.  There were messages there from around Tuesday, but nothing from Yahoo, or on my alternative account.

I’m glad I got access, I went through my inbox, and worked out the places my email address is registered, and the important ones are now redirected to a more secure email provider! And my secondary email is just as secure too, so hopefully no more rubbish like this week!

I have realised how many places I have logins, and passwords, Oh My God, the mind boggles!

From emails to banking, social media, to shopping sites, resource sites, and so many more!

How reliant are we on email?

Thursday Thoughts – The 11+ Nightmare

my-right-brain-is-cartoon_finalThis Thursday, my thoughts turn to all those Year 6 students who are going to be sitting their 11+ tests.

Yes Lil Man is in Year 6, and no, he won’t be one of those stressed kids today.

It was a big decision, the whether to get him to sit, or not, and I posted about my thoughts here.

Ultimately, at the big meeting, where parents were given all the information about this dreaded test, I spoke with both his class teacher and the head, and was advised to at least sign up for the test if we were unsure, it was better to have signed up, and not sat than to not sign up, then regret your child not having this opportunity.  I was also advised that Grammar School my not be the best choice for him. This I agree with, but I wanted him to have the opportunity to decide for himself.

I dutifully got all the books, and was there for him.  If he wanted to do it, we could go through the books, and tutor him.  He looked, but found even the simplest questions quite trying,

Now, this mum is very proud of her Lil Man. He’s gone from lagging behind all the time in his academic career, to actually hitting the expected level of progress, well that was last year, before all this crazy grammar stuff hit! I was not going to push him.  I have been realistic when talking to him as well. But he is registered to take the test, just in case.

For those that don’t know, the 11+ tests are a set of tests that are done so children can apply to Grammar Schools, where there is a very high academic standard.  It’s a hard slog, of you were tutored to pass the test… you may be playing catch up the rest of your academic life. But if you are naturally a bright child, then you will be pushed to reach the heights that you can achieve.

But this, by no means, means that if you aren’t at Grammar School you are thick, unintelligent, or that you won’t get anywhere in life.

Education, especially secondary, is what you make it.  If you want to learn, and make something of yourself, you will try hard wherever you are, and your teachers will be great at either school, it’s up to you to reach for the moon… if you miss, no worries, you’ll still end up in the stars!

Good luck those who are taking it.

Lil Man made the decision to not sit it.  He feels he would struggle at a school where academia is the be-all and end-all.  He is an intelligent little guy, but it shows in different ways!

Asking for Help – Please Share and Help Me Find My Sister

Help a brother out…

Do I really not know my English??!!

grammarOh My God!

As if my week couldn’t be any more stressful with the start of class, new babies in, and my Yahoo Mail issues (72 hours later, STILL nothing!), today my kids were with me for an hour after school before being picked up, and I suggested Lil Man do some homework while he had the time.

It was a Grammar test, or SPaG, as they are called now – Spelling, Punctuation  and Grammar – and the first 5 questions were perfectly simple for me to deal with. then they became a little more complex, and I really needed to think! I even asked a colleagues opinion to make sure I wasn’t thinking wrong…

Then they hit us with these alien words!

I say alien, as I really don’t remember ever learning this as a grammar exercise with these names – does that make sense? Heck half of my degree was English!

Subordinate clause, modal verbs, the correct place for dashes, as opposed to brackets, relative clauses… Jeez, he’s 10!!!!!

I told him to just leave it, as he was getting so stressed… (and I couldn’t be of any help, as I felt clueless myself)!

Still, as it was his homework, I did some research for myself, then tried to explain them all, so he could have a good go at actually trying to answer the questions!

I feel like I have been tested myself… and failed miserably!

And in other news, school was great, less crying from our new babies, and a longer session too.  Wish me luck for tomorrow, as my co-teacher doesn’t work Thursday and Friday, so I am solo with my assistants! GULP!

Oh, and I was presented with a new bit of classroom furniture too… after my co-teacher had left. A large shelving unit that we have no space for. ERM…. not sure what to do here!  I could envisage where it could go, but I am a little nervous to actually do anything without consulting the team.  Yes I am the TEACHER in the classroom, but there is another, who is more experienced, and the others are also older and more experienced too!

I had a re-jig, temporarily, and I hope the others can see what I am thinking when they come in tomorrow!
