Funky Chicken at the Crooked House Pub

When I was younger, we used to visit this wonderfully quaint pub with my uncles and aunts in Wolverhampton.
The The Crooked House.
Due to whatever happens to the ground and foundations, its beamed exterior and interior have all gone higgledy piggledy! Its great! Inside there is one beam that slopes quite obviously to the eye, yet if you put a steel ball bearing at the lower end, it appears to roll upwards! So fascinating for us kids, and adults alike!
A couple of summers back my parents thought it would be a great idea to take Hubby Dearest, the kids and me back there. The kids loved it!

The Crooked House now

They have added a children’s play area too, so the kids were in their element! There was even a small animals hutch with rabbits, ducks, geese and one of these…

What is it??!!

I haven’t a clue what it’s called but that is one ‘Funky Chicken’!!!!

Oooh my back!

How I'm feeling right now!

We need a new bed.
My Hubby Dearest and me are not getting the best sleep, partly due to the middle of the night visitor, but partly because the base of our bed is slowly giving up the ghost…
However, thankfully, I woke this morning with a normal back.
We had lunch then went to mooch around the local bed stores…
Oh the confusion!!! Which mattress do we want? I know about the base but mattress is key.
After spending a good hour jumping (not literally!) on and off beds, lying down and testing them, my back now kills! So much so that I am sat here with a hot water bottle across my back!
Sympathy required!!!

We all have to say goodbye some day…

This morning I was greeted with the news that an elder member of our family had passed away.  She was a wonderful lady, so kind and gentle, always with a smile on her face and whatever she said, it never hurt, because her lilting voice was always so soothing. She was not a close blood member of our family, but through the marriage of one of my aunts, and our bonds grew as families got to know each other.

I spoke with my Pops this morning, my mum and he were both pretty close to this lady, and we both know she was old, and that she was suffering in her last few years.

It was for the best.

Can I go on record and say I HATE that little sentence with a vengeance.

I know you don’t want someone you love to suffer, or to go on suffering, but equally I don’t really want that person to have gone, so how was it best? For them, yes, for me, not at all. Selfish, I know, but that’s just how I feel.

My Pops has always been very spiritual and he has a very serene way of thinking about death, and  coping with it.  He really doesn’t cry, or get extremely emotional. He prays.  I have seen, over the years, many loved ones leave us, one of the cons of having a large family, but it has exposed us to death from a young age.  I would see him be comforting to everyone, but never really need comfort in the same way himself.  When I was old enough to think about these things, I asked him why he didn’t cry, or get upset.

He explained that he had never known his father, he passed on when my Pops was tiny, and yes, he used to get emotional at news like this, just like us, but then something happened, and it put life into perspective for him.  He left his family in Kenya, to study in India, in Mumbai to do his Dentistry training. It was a long haul to get there in those days, so not an easy feat to come and go freely, and telephones were still few and far between in the village in Kenya where they lived. Letters would take weeks to arrive, not like the texts and emails we have now, or the WhatsApp and various instant messenger services available to anyone with a mobile.

One day he received a letter at his dormitory from  his older brother, informing him that their mother had passed away.  He sat in silence for a while, digesting the news.  After a while, his room mate came in, and noticed that there was a letter for home. always hungry to hear of home news, even thought it wasn’t his own, he asked Pops how everyone was.  Pops replied, quite calmly, that the letter was sent to tell him that he had lost his mother.  Immediately the room mate burst into tears, and went to console my Pops, who he then noticed wasn’t crying.

“Why aren’t you crying, dost (friend)? Beji has left us, aren’t you sad?”

Pops then said that yes he was sad, but he had looked at the post mark of the letter, and the date his brother said that Beji had passed on. “I realised that at the time my mother was struggling for her last breaths, I was on a stage, dancing and celebrating… my mother passed on, and it took me 3 weeks to find out.  But all that time, the world kept on revolving, we all kept on living, and even now I know, things haven’t stopped.” He wasn’t in a position to rush home, funerals happened almost immediately at that time , so he silently said goodbye to his mother himself and said his own prayers for her.

From then on, he didn’t let death scare him, or upset him. He realised that life goes on, and we need to give the departed soul peace by calmly remembering them. And it is true.  I totally understand where Pops was coming from.

But I can’t guarantee I can do that.  I am a very emotional person, and even though I am known for smiling all the time, when someone I love passes on, tears will always spring to my eyes, I  do question why…

It scares me already, what will I be like when it is my own parents? I’m definitely not ready, but I do know we have to say goodbye some day, hopefully some day a long long long time away…

The Compassion of a Kid

You know my Lil Man, he’s a sensitive soul. He’s a total boy in all respects, active, a bit rough n tumble, but he has a heart, and a big one at that.

This evening, Lil Man did me proud.
We went shopping and at the supermarket they had those little machines where you put a £1 in and receive a bit of tat. “Mummy, I have a pound in my pocket, can I get something from there?”  I replied that it was his money, but not to get anything just for the sake of it. (Lil Princess, meanwhile, is trying to wheedle a £1 out of mummy as she doesn’t know where hers is!)
We went, looked, and it was as I had expected, a load of rubbish. So he happily put his £1 away and we went on.
We popped into KFC for a healthy Friday night dinner (!) And as Lil Princess was debating whether to have a Krushems shake or a sundae, Lil Man was looking at the charity collection pot on the counter. “This is for the really poor, isn’t it?” ( it was a world hunger charity of some sort) “Yup, son, it is” and continued with my order. He silently took his £1, along with another one he had in his pocket and dropped it in the pot.
“They need this much more than me.”

Awwww! My heart would burst with pride, if it could! I’m so happy! His heart is bigger than him! And he truly is just like his daddy!

(Lil Princess meanwhile realizes how happy mummy is with her brother, and tries to impress me with all these ideas she has, to help charity… “But I can’t find my £1”!!!)

A huge disappointment

Those of you who follow my blog know just how much I want some snow here, and it’s just not happening. Tuesday morning greeted me with a teeny tiny layer that dissipated within a couple of hours, so BOO! to that!
Yesterday was so promising! It was cold, we started with sleet and short flurries of the great white stuff! I played with my class outside in the afternoon, and we were accompanied by minuscule hailstones.
After school, on a visit to town with my two monsters, there were beautiful huge flakes falling…yay!
So I hoped, with some anticipation, that I would wake to at least some snow.
Did I? Did I heck!
There was none. Nothing. Nada.
Not even a speck of frost on my windscreen!
No fair!!!

And in other disappointing weekly news, Lil Man’s match, his first ever football match was cancelled (obviously not due to the weather!).training had been cancelled because of the ‘snow’ on Tuesday, and then his coach, our PE teacher at school, managed to give himself a head injury on Wednesday, due to a whiteboard with a mind of its own! So he was signed off, and that led to cancellation of match, and some very disappointed players…(but they were also concerned about the coach, honestly!)

So to make today feel better I’ll have a slightly naughty but yummy breakfast!

Tea and Nutella on toast, can’t beat it!
Happy Friday everyone!
