#JusJoJan Daily Prompt / #SoCS – Jan. 21st/17 – Glass

Day 21 of Linda’s #JusJo Jan challenge, combined with her prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday.

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday and Just Jot It January is: “glass.” Use the word “glass,” or find something that’s made of it and use that in your post. Have fun!

Glass... Hmm, the first thing that comes to mind is glasses. Of the optical kind. You know, spectacles!

I am not a glasses wearer anymore. Around 2009 I had laser eye surgery to correct my extreme short-sightedness, and an astigmatism in one eye.It was then that I finally waved goodbye to my prescription glasses!

I was the tender age of eleven when I began to suffer awful headaches and blurry vision. An eye test proved that I needed glasses.

I recall so clearly the first day I wore my new specs home. I watched Neighbours every evening on BBC 1, and that day I was amazed at the fact that I could actually see the characters. But previously, I hadn’t even realised how blurry they had been. My whole world had been a blur, and now it was crystal clear!

At the time I was not a fashion conscious person at all. A pair of glasses meant nothing to me… and when I look at the photos I can tell! Good God, what was I thinking when choosing my frames! From a granny, to Sue Pollard, I had plenty of ‘looks’!

Then I developed a sense of style… well, kind of, and I hated to get photographed in them! As soon as I was able, I got contact lenses, at sixteen, then I felt top of the world!

It was great! I could wear sunglasses, do my makeup, and generally felt less self-conscious too.

As I started university, I realised that I was not going to be able to hide behind my contacts forever, so I invested in much nicer frames which still looked rather cool. At least in halls, or at lectures, the morning after a late night, it didn’t bother me what I was wearing, because the glasses were pretty trendy!

Then I realised that contacts weren’t always fun, especially if you fell asleep with them on, or if you managed to lose one!

Getting older, once I started work in the bank, I stopped wearing the contacts, unless I was going out. The specs lent a much more professional vibe!

Then after marriage, came kids, and the sleepless nights.

It was during those years that I started to wish for neither glasses nor contacts, but for my sight back. Grappling for my specs at night to tell the time as a baby woke for a middle of the night feed, or sometimes just wanting to know the time because the baby hadn’t woken, it occurred to me how much faffing around I was doing.

When Hubby Dearest suggested laser, I was intrigued but also scared. It was a frightening thought, someone cutting at your eye, but the outcome was something very appealing.

I didn’t get the courage up to even enquire until Lil Princess was a few months old, and was then told I had to wait until six months after I stopped breastfeeding before having the treatment.

So that was a possibility of another eight or so months before I could see again.

I did it, though.

And the feeling of opening my eyes, once they had settled the next morning, and seeing clearly straight away was mind blowing! It was like the first day of wearing glasses!

So it’s been eight years since I waved goodbye to my glasses, and as far as I know, my sight is still 20:20!

There you have it! Glass!

#JusJoJan Daily Prompt / #SoCS – Jan. 14th/17 – The P Word!

Day 14 of Linda’s #JusJoJan Challenge, combined with her regular Saturday prompt for Stream Of Consciousness Saturday.

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday and Just Jot It January is: A word that starts with “P.” Find a word that begins with the letter “p,” and make it the theme of your post. Bonus points for starting and ending your post with a “p” word. Enjoy!

Poop!

That is what first came in to my mind when I read the prompt… really!

I deal with plenty of that sh*t (excuse the pun!) every day at work, what with nappies, which thankfully are much less now, to those little loves who can’t quite wipe their own bums yet, to the even less pleasant, ahem, explosions, that can come if they are suffering from the beginnings of upset tummies and bugs! Pleasant, yes, I know!

But poop… there is another reason I like that word. One of my Slovakian Roma children has very limited English, and he does try to communicate, but what with a father who, despite his best efforts, gets phrases wrong (like spank you, instead of thank you! I kid you not!) and a mother who doesn’t a speaka da lingo at all, he hasn’t really got the best role model at home! He is a polite child generally and will ask us if he needs assistance. Usually, we would hear a little “Excuse me please” from others, but no. From him, we get “Poopy peas!” So cute! And funny!

Talking of poop, we also have a rather windy child there too. When he toots, oh don’t we know it! And those days, the whiff is just constant! And he is more than happy to admit it! I will usually smell something, then ask him ” Did you just pop again?” and he looks at me, smiles then nods!

But he’s not the only one… I have to admit that recently, due to this extremely healthy diet of mine, I’ve been known to let out the odd silent but violent parp!

#JusJoJan Daily Prompt / #SoCS – Jan. 7th/17 – Coat

Day 7 of #JusJoJan by Linda, and it is combined with the Stream of Consciousness Saturday challenge she runs.

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday and Just Jot It January is: “coat.” Use it any way you’d like. Have fun!

Coats.

Can be the bane of my life at times!

At home, it is the battle I have with Lil Princess, to actually do hers up in the howling winds, or to actually hang it up on the real hook, and not the invisible one, which lands it on the floor! Sonu Singh doesn’t mind, though, it gives him a cosy bed to lay on!

And Lil Man, well my coat issue with him is that he is always chewing the top of the zip of whatever coat or top he wears! Oh, it’s such a frustrating habit!

At school, we get children with the same coats, and I cannot understand why parents can’t just write names on them so we can clear any mix-ups up quickly! You tend to get to know the coats of the children after a while, but it is inevitable that there will be that small selection of children who appear to have a different coat every day of the week, in which case anything you had remembered will not help in the slightest!

But I do love a good coat, warm and snuggly, especially in this cold weather! Wrapped up warm with a hat, scarf and gloves too!

#SoCS Dec. 31/16 – First/Last

Linda’s SoCS prompt this week.

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “first/last.” Use one or both words, or find words that mean the same. Bonus points if you start your post with “first/beginning/start” etc. and end with “last/end” etc. Enjoy!

First thought with this prompt
Can I write a good haiku?
The final word… last

First, I just have to say, thanks to Linda for this SoCS challenge. I have really enjoyed participating this year. Daily challenges are not easy for me, with work, but weekly ones, I am able to handle!

It’s been fun, writing off the cuff with given prompts, made me think a little outside the box on occasion too!

And long do I hope to continue taking part!

Now, I will stop rambling… I know what you’re thinking… she’s shut up… at LAST!

#SoCS Dec. 23/16 – Cook 🎄

Linda’s SoCS prompt this week.

Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “cook.” Find a word that means “cook,” (or use “cook” itself) and use it any way you’d like. Have fun!

Now this post is dedicated to all those cooks who turn into 5-star chefs at this time of year.

Admittedly, all the offerings don’t end up as Michelin starred dishes, but hey, we all try, don’t we!

As a child, I always used to look forward to our Christmas dinner. We had chicken, though, not turkey, as Pops wasn’t fond of the dry meat. Served up with the obligatory stuffing, roasties, Pigs in Blankets and veg, not forgetting the gravy, it always tasted amazing!

It wasn’t until I got married that I actually realised exactly how much work went into this one meal!

From the initial buying of all the components, to the preparations, to the timing of all the individual items, to the juggling of oven space… my, it was mind blowing!

I think my respect for my mother went up 10 notches just after juggling that first Christmas meal!

Since then I have single-handedly cooked a fair few festive meals, until my brother in law got married, then there were two of us to deal with the preparations!

Sounds totally sexist, right? The women in the kitchen, slaving away, while the blokes slowly get tipsy and watch Christmas TV!

Well, if I am honest, I’d rather be in the kitchen!

Let them deal with the kids moaning that there aren’t enough batteries, or working out how to fix presents together! And they can also ration the TV between themselves… fun when you have kids wanting one thing, and the adults totally different programmes!

No, I’d much rather be in the kitchen cooking. It’s rather fun, to be honest, glass of wine at the side, good company to while the time away, and someone to share the burden with!

And satisfying when everyone enjoys the meal… even brussel sprouts!!!

Merry Christmas all!
